Red-bellied on suet
HOME MADE SUET
  • 2 cups lard (available at any grocery store) May substitute shortening
  • 1 cup peanut butter (you can also add crushed peanuts)
  • 3 cups wild bird feed. (black oil sunflower seed or hulled sunflower seeds work well).
  • Optional - dice up small bits of fruit and add to the mixture.

Combine lard and peanut butter and melt on low heat. (young children should be supervised) Once completely melted stir in bird feed and crushed peanuts. Pour mixture into ice-cube trays and freeze for 2 hours. (may use a lager plastic container if desired) Remove from ice-cube trays and place in a suet feeder. You can also place suet cubes on a platform bird feeder. Try using a piece of mesh onion sack filled with the suet cubes and hang it up. Lay 6" pieces of string in each section of the ice cube tray before pouring mixer into it then use the string to hang suet cubes.
