JULY BIRDING NEWS
Open our July Newsletter in pdf below
July Bird Notes:
  • Look beyond the bird feeder at the many summer birds around us. They will only be here a few short months. Enjoy them.
  •  Parents will be bringing their young to the bird feeders.
  • Suet and shelled peanuts will continue to be in high demand by woodpeckers.
  • Goldfinches and Cedar Waxwings will begin nesting by months end.
  •  Keep bird baths and avian ponds clean and fresh. A dripper can help replenish water.
  • Plant tubular shaped flowers now to attract hummingbirds on their return in early August.
  •  Live mealworms are a great addition for feeding Cardinals, Robins, and Bluebirds.
  •  If you have Orioles, keep the jelly & oranges fresh. They will return with their young.
  • Caged bird feeders are great for attracting woodpeckers & smaller birds, not grackles.

Wingtip: It's the 'dog days of summer'.and you may notice on hot days that birds frequent the feeders less often. You'll most likely see them feeding in the morning and late afternoon. Like humans, when its hot they don't eat as much.
You may see a bird on the ground with out stretched wings and beak wide open. This is their method of disappating heat. Birds are similar to dogs as they do not sweat. Keeping fresh water in a shaded bird bath is ideal for helping birds cool down. If you fill your bird bath in the evening and find that its almost empty in the morning you may have an owl visiting the bath during the night.

Wingtip: A common question asked by customers who have been enjoying the orioles at the jelly and oranges is that all of a sudden they seemed to have disappered. Not to worry. When orioles have young chicks in the nest the adults become busy collecting insects making hundreds of trips to the nest each day to feed those demanding youngsters. Once their off-spring fledge from the nest the adults will return to the feeders with those young birds in tow.
Suet is Not Just For Winter
Did you know woodpeckers will consume more suet between March and summer's end than all winter long? Here is everything you need to know about attracting woodpeckers and feeding suet year round...read more

OUR MOST POPULAR HOPPER & PLATFORM BIRD FEEDERS

Environmentally
Friendly Bird Feeders
Although the durability and natural look of cedar bird feeders continue to be preferred, the new line of feeders made from 100% post consumer recycled plastic is gaining in popularity. Many of these bird feeders have a lifetime warranty against fading, pealing, cracking, and chipping. They clean up like brand new, even after years of use. And speak of easy cleaning, many of the cedar and recycled plastic feeders we stock have removable perforated steel bottoms. This also allows moisture to pass through and the seed to remain dry.
