A common question we get this time of year and most of winter is to help ID the hawk in a persons backyard. It might be a Red-tailed hawk more bent on catching a squirrel or rabbit than a bird off the feeder. It could be an American Kestrel, the smallest of the falcon family, but they seem to be more rural where mice and smaller mammals tend to be active during a winter day. Either of these two birds may take a bird in your backyard if times are tough. More than likely the hawk in your backyard will be a Cooper's Hawk, a permanent resident nesting in both rural and urban landscapes. It may be the Sharp-shinned Hawk that drifts south from the Boreal forests of Canada during the winter months. You won't find sharpies in the Great Plaines or most of the lower 48 states during the summer months. Both these birds share very similar traits, but there are several that distinguishes them from each other. So I thought I'd write a story about the habits of these two woodland hawks and how to tell who is who in THE HAWK IN MY BACKYARD

November Bird Notes:
  • Winter birds will make themselves plentiful around the bird feeders.
  • Watch the skies as ducks and geese, the last to migrate, begin to move south.
  • Now is time to check the bird bath heater to provide fresh water during the winter
  • Continue to watch your feeders for new birds either showing up or passing through.
  • Goldfinches and Juncos from the north are arriving. Will the Pine Siskins?
  • Consider relocating your bird feeders for easy filling and viewing from indoors.
  •  It’s a great time to expand your bird feeding program with a different kind of bird feeder that will attract new birds to your backyard during winter.
  • Get a friend or relative started feeding birds. Buy them a bird feeder for Christmas.
