Coexisting - It's What We Do!
by Stephanie Ellis, Wild Care Executive Director
Wild Care’s mission is to give wildlife a second chance while educating the public on how humans and wildlife can coexist.
As wildlife rehabilitators, we are often among the first to identify emerging wildlife trends and diseases. Beyond caring for injured animals, we believe it is our responsibility to help prevent future harm through public education, social media, and outreach programs.
So far this year, we have delivered 11 educational programs to schools, nonprofits, senior centers, churches, and community groups on topics ranging from coyotes and snowy owls, to caring for injured or orphaned wildlife. Across every program, our message is the same: coexistence is possible. In fact, most of our wildlife was here long before us. They have learned to adapt to humans moving into their space. We should give them the same courtesy.
When we protect wildlife, we ultimately protect the balance, compassion, and connection that sustain us all.

Wild Care Celebrates Mother's Day With a Tea Party Fit for a Queen
It was a day fit for a queen at the Wild Care tea party held at the Crosby Mansion on Mother’s Day Weekend. Guests enjoyed a talk about wildlife moms and Chimney Swifts given by Wild Care’s Director, Stephanie Ellis. Tables were spread throughout the elegant first floor rooms of the historic mansion, and the mantles were adorned with beautiful bird nests. Guests sipped tea from vintage tea cups, and traditional three-tiered trays were filled with vegan sweets and savories from Herbivore Patisserie. Tea, jam, and honey were generously donated by Cape & Islands Tea, and Lighthouse Keepers’ Pantry. The Friends of Crosby Mansion gave guests guided tours and spoke about the history of the Brewster architectural treasure, and Thom Dutton filled the rooms with harp music. We are so grateful to everyone that was part of this beautiful event that helped raise over $10,000 for Wild Care!
Congratulations to Best Mom Ever basket winner Sally Bullard, and Swag Bag grand prize winner Maria Damon! There were so many beautiful, fancy hats to be seen making selecting just one to win our Fancy Hat Contest a difficult job for Wild Care’s Animal Care Director and Judge Jennifer Taylor. Congratulations to our winner Jennifer Budryk for her incredible hat which was topped with a mother robin in a nest with a chick falling from the nest.
Thank you to our event sponsors: The Bird Watcher’s General Store, Cape Cod Bliss Realty, Adorn Cape Cod, My Generation Energy, Vivian Todini, and Judyth and Dan Katz. Music was sponsored by Serenity Farm.
Thank you to all of our incredible donors, and volunteers, with special thanks to Richard Archer and The Friends of Crosby Mansion volunteers.

Ohhhh possums...
These sweet Virginia opossum babies were found spilled out of the pouch of their deceased mother in Acushnet and were brought to Wild Care.
If you find a deceased opossum on the road, first make sure it’s safe to approach (check for road safety). Check the pouch for babies. If babies are present, please bring the entire opossum to us so we can safely remove and care for them—separation from their mother is traumatic.
If babies are scattered nearby, please collect them all and transport to us. When in doubt, contact our HELPLINE: 508-240-2255 or contact a local wildlife rehabilitator.

Turtles are on the Move
Eastern Box Turtles and other turtle species are out and about. Tis the season! Please be mindful when driving. If you see a turtle crossing the road, and it is safe to do so, move the turtle to the side of the road in which it was headed. Do not move turtles to a new location. Many turtles have a very limited territory and will spend most of their lives trying to get back to where they hatched. Finally, it is illegal in the state of MA to keep most species of wild turtles as pets.

A Happy Update on a Turtle Named Patches
It warms our hearts to receive this message about a sweet Eastern Box Turtle we treated in June, 2024. We are thankful to have played a role in her recovery, and wish Patches a long, and healthy life! Please be on the lookout for all our wildlife neighbors when doing yard work. You could save a life.
“We always consider it lucky when we cross paths with a turtle (or any wildlife), but especially our old friend Patches. Patches was accidentally nicked by some farm equipment and we brought her to Wild Care for treatment. The amazing team was kind and compassionate, they cleaned the wound ‘patched’ her up with Bee’s wax and we are so excited to see she is thriving.”

Keep Your Pool Safe for Small Wildlife
With Memorial Day Weekend being the official start of the summer season, many people are starting to open up their pools. Each year countless small animals fall into the water and struggle to climb out due to slippery pool walls. Please consider adding a small wildlife pool safety ramp to give a crucial exit path for frogs, birds, and small mammals to escape. You might save a life.
