House Finch fledgling

Black Racer Snakes

Wild Care Friends.

The weather we have all been waiting for is finally here, and with that, our Wildlife Clinic and Nursery is filling up with baby animals, a sure sign of the season. We did some planning in the off-season and were prepared for a call about House Finches nesting under the shrink wrap of a stored boat. We re-nested the young finches in a bush right beside the location where the boat resided before it had to be moved. The finch parents came to the rescue! We've designed portable nest boxes for the next time this happens. We work hard to keep baby animals with their parents. We hope the birds will love their new digs.

Orphaned rabbits, squirrels, opossums, mice and more arrive at our Clinic daily. We recently received five Black Racer Snakes that became tangled in pond netting at a home in Truro. Sadly two of them did not make it, but we hope this unfortunate event provided an opportunity to use this experience to discuss safe alternatives, and help save more of these beneficial animals.

These are the things I love most about Wild Care. The fact that we put skill, dedication, and compassion into ALL the creatures brought to our door. Whether it's a Bald Eagle, or a Short-tailed Shrew. Every animal matters.

These everyday miracles can't happen without your support for which we are grateful.

Stephanie Ellis,

Executive Director

We Captioned This Photo "Out on a Limb”

We asked our Facebook friends to caption this photo, and they did not disappoint! A few of our favorites are “Osprey version of being in the dog house!” By Kathy Sheehan, “Location, Location, Location”, by Leigh Silas Hanrihan, “I’d go out on a limb for my family!", by Joanne Gregoire, and “Osprey version of a Man Cave” by Kerry Reid.

Cape Cod hosts the largest Osprey population in all of MA, likely between 400-500 pairs. Historically, Osprey nested in trees. As habitat continues to dwindle and the Osprey population increases, Osprey often nest on utility poles and other man-made structures. It's a truly wonderful thing when they find a suitable tree! Osprey are back from near extirpation until DDT was banned in the 70's, and population recovery efforts were implemented, including man-made nesting platforms. A true success story.

Wild Care's Expansion Project

Naming Opportunities Available

Wild Care has been saving wildlife on Cape Cod for thirty years. If you love wildlife, and the work that Wild Care does for animals, we have a few special naming opportunities that will greatly help us reach our goals and recognize individuals or businesses in appreciation.

Naming opportunities range from a $15,000 donation for an all-inclusive Mobility Ramp, $50,000 for a designated Cleanliness Room, $75,000 for a "Bird Walk" Deck, and $100,000 to name the Animal Admissions reception area. Please email Executive Director Stephanie Ellis for all the details.

Wild Care has grown so much since we started serving our community 30 years ago. We treat over 1,800 animals each year from our antique home on the Orleans Rotary. We are bursting at the seams! This much needed expansion will help our staff and volunteers work more efficiently by giving us a designated place to clean all of the things necessary to care for our animal patients, and an accessible reception area for animal in-take.
