It's Fall! friends and family are heading back home after enjoying the sun and surf of another Cape Cod summer. As you take in the quiet time and cooler temperatures remember that now is the time to prevent a different type of houseguest from spending the winter with you. A little preventative work now will go a long way towards stopping animals from making your home their winter nesting place. Go around the foundation of your home and seal up any large spaces, fill in smaller spots with steel wool, and eliminate food sources that may attract rodents. I can’t stress enough the harmful impact rodenticides have on our wildlife . There are alternative methods.
Check out our web resource page of Humane Rodent Control Solutions. The key to reducing rodent populations long term includes exclusion, deterrents and eliminating the attractants. A little effort up front will provide a whole lot of effectiveness long term.
Thank you for caring about all of our wild creatures.

Snapping Turtle May Spend the Winter at Wild Care
This gorgeous Common Snapping Turtle came to us a few months ago after being hit by a car in Orleans. The turtle suffered a shell fracture that was repaired by Jennifer Taylor, our Animal Care Coordinator, using beeswax and aluminum tape. This turtle, nicknamed "Julia", is healing well and has captured all of our hearts with her charisma and beauty. Reptiles have a slower metabolism and healing process than a mammal or bird., so she may be with us for the winter, to be released next spring. (Julia is likely over 30 years old.)
Watch Julia, and learn about Snapping Turtles in the above video.
The sponsorship and winter care of this beautiful Snapping Turtle named Julia were made by Julie Silva in loving memory of her father Andrew Petite. Julie’s dad had a unique fondness for turtles so she was excited for the opportunity to help with the turtle's care. Julia was also her dad’s mother’s name. “It is all meant to be” said Julie.

Juvenile Fish Crow
Rescued from Restaurant
Chimney Released
This lucky juvenile Fish Crow was found in the second floor chimney of the Bookstore and Restaurant on July 30th. The bird was dehydrated and could barely stand. It was rehabilitated by our staff and then went into pre-release care with Kerry Reid, our Corvid Specialist and Wildlife Rehabilitator. The bird made a full recovery and was just released back in Wellfleet after over a month of care.
Watch the release of this beautiful bird in the video above.

Our Patients Can Breath Easier Thanks to You!
A few days ago we put out a call for donations to help us replace one of our Oxygen concentrators. Oxygen is a critically important part of treatment of our wildlife patients suffering from shock, head trauma, respiratory illness, smoke inhalation and more. A generous donor offered to MATCH $1,000 towards a new one. With the accessories and shipping, the cost is just under $2,000. Thanks to you, we've raised $1,070 towards a new 02 concentrator, and have met our $1,000 match. The outpouring of support for our work is ASTOUNDING. We have no words, except... THANK YOU!!!

Baby Turtles are Hatching Now
It is turtle hatching season! Be on the lookout for these little hatchlings emerging and making their way towards their new habitats. If you find a hatchling turtle, don't move it, and don't place it in water! Place it under leaf litter in the location where it was found.
If you spot an adult or hatchling turtle in the road and it is safe to do so, pick it up and carry it to the side of the road in the direction it is heading. Please do not place them in water, and never relocate or take a turtle home with you.
