Eddy Foundation Grant Provides Funds for Storage Solutions
in Wild Care’s New Building
We are incredibly thankful for a generous grant award from the Eddy Foundation. The Mary-Louise Eddy and Ruth Eddy sisters were two generous philanthropists and Brewster residents who devoted their lives to the preservation of open spaces, wildlife, pets, and a good quality of life and enrichment for people. Wild Care is fortunate to be one of the charities they cherished. They have supported us through their Estate for over 18 years and we are grateful for their continued support. This generous grant award will cover the cost of custom built storage solutions in our new Education Center, wheeled carts for dishes, crates and laundry, an additional washer/dryer stack that we've added to our new cleaning room, and an exam table for our new exam room.

Snowy Owls are Here - Here's How to View Them Safely | |
|
Winter on Cape Cod brings with it the return of Snowy Owls. These magnificent birds are such a spectacular sight along the many coastal areas that they can create quite a frenzy of people trying to get a close up look or perfect photo. While viewing Snowy Owls it’s important to be respectful of them, give them some distance, and if you post photos, please don’t disclose the location to avoid a rush of owl paparazzi.
Visit Wild Care’s Snowy Owl web page to get some great facts about Snowy Owls, tips on how to view them safely, learn more about studies being done to protect them, and watch Lower Cape TV’s video of Athena, the Snowy Owl rescued, rehabbed, and released by Wild Care in February 2022.

Is that a Penguin in Your Driveway? Winter Storms Bring Dovekies to Unusual Places Around Cape Cod
Winter storms can blow tiny Dovekies into parking lots, driveways and other locations that are unusual for a bird that spends most of its time in the open ocean feeding on plankton that they catch underwater. Dovekies weigh in at about 6 ounces and look like tiny penguins. For a little bird, they are a lot of work and require frequent high calorie feedings with a tube-feeding formula and tiny fish, and spend as much time as possible in our seabird therapy pools to stay waterproof.
If you find a Dovekie on land, it is most likely exhausted and in need of specialized care. It is important not to put it back in the water. Place it into a box in a warm quiet place and do not offer food or water. Call our wildlife helpline: 508-240-2255.

And then there
were three...
| |
We have three Cory's Shearwaters in our care. All of these birds were found beached in different locations in Provincetown and Eastham, at different times. One had abrasions on its feet from a dry landing. We are working on getting weight on them, waterproofing, and getting them conditioned for life back out on the open ocean.
Cory's Shearwaters are long-distance migrant seabirds that spend their lives at sea when they are not breeding. They breed largely on Portuguese Islands. We love having them as patients. They are docile and quite beautiful.
Cory's Shearwaters have an incredible sense of smell and can navigate and find food by scent.

White-winged Scoter Recovering From Injury in Wild Care's
Therapy Pool
This stunning White-winged Scoter was found on a road in Woods Hole suffering from an injury possibly caused by a dry landing. A winter resident on Cape Cod, these beautiful birds spend their time here in the ocean using their sturdy bills to eat shellfish. Although a salt water bird here in the winter, they return to Canada to breed and can be found on lakes and ponds. They nest on the ground in brush, and lay 9-10 eggs.
This beauty is recovering nicely and getting waterproof in our therapy pool. Wild Care staff are monitoring the bird to be sure there are no internal injuries, and have not found any external injuries or fractures. We are very hopeful for a full recovery!

Wild Care Staff Make Gingerbread Houses
for Wildlife at Annual
Holiday Celebration
Gingerbread houses are a fun way to get crafty during the holiday season. At Wild Care we wanted to share that holiday spirt with our wildlife friends. Seeds, nuts, berries, suet, fruit, and peanut butter mixed with evergreens make a beautiful display and tasty treat for birds and other wild critters. They’re fun to make, and even more fun to watch who comes by to visit!
These photos are a few of the wildlife gingerbread houses we made at our annual Wild Care holiday gathering. We hope they inspire you to make your own!
Thank you to Shaw's in
Orleans for donating
the gingerbread houses!
