Giving Tuesday Donations are a Wild Success!

Goodness, we have no words. Thanks to your generosity we greatly exceeded our Giving Tuesday fundraising goal! Your donations totaled $28,080 which includes a $2,500 matching donation, and an anonymous $10,000 from a generous donor! These funds will go a long way towards helping to care for our wildlife patients.

Thank you for your generosity

and thoughtful notes!

Herring Gull Recovering from Foot Injury with the Help of a Feathered Friend

This sweet Herring Gull came to us in November from Yarmouth Port. We believe it was exposed to some kind of chemical that caused blisters/peeling on it’s feet. He is healing nicely, and new skin has now grown in, but he developed a bumble on his toe so we wrapped both feet to keep them even.

The healing process has been a little easier with the help of another gull. These two Herring Gulls became fast friends in Wild Care’s elliptical aviary and enjoy pool time together. Gulls are very social animals, and having a buddy is helping these sweet birds get stronger and ready for release together every day!

Snowy Owls are Here - Here's How to View Them Safely

Winter on Cape Cod brings with it the return of Snowy Owls. These magnificent birds are such a spectacular sight along the many coastal areas that they can create quite a frenzy of people trying to get a close up look or perfect photo. While viewing Snowy Owls it’s important to be respectful of them, give them some distance, and if you post photos, please don’t disclose the location to avoid a rush of owl paparazzi.

Visit Wild Care’s Snowy Owl web page to get some great facts about Snowy Owls, tips on how to view them safely, learn more about studies being done to protect them, and watch Lower Cape TV’s video of Athena, the Snowy Owl rescued, rehabbed, and released by Wild Care in February 2022.

Cute and Cozy, This Little Opossum is

Both This Winter

We can't blame this sweet little Virginia Opossum for wanting to stay snuggled up under the blankets this winter! This opossum came from Osterville. He has trouble walking likely due to spinal/head trauma. He is slowly improving and loves to cuddle up in his blankets!

Black Scoter Released

This sub-adult male Black Scoter was found stranded and not waterproof. After receiving supportive care and spending time in our seabird pools, he was on his way. We watched him dive underwater upon release. A sure sign he was feeling good!

Black Scoters are a type of sea duck that winter on Cape Cod. They form rafts off of Nauset Beach and many other locations on the coast of Cape Cod sometimes with White-winged and Surf Scoters. We release them in calm waters that are just a short flight away from where he will eventually join the other birds.

Wild Care Staff Make Gingerbread Houses

for Wildlife at Annual

Holiday Celebration

Gingerbread houses are a fun way to get crafty during the holiday season. At Wild Care we love to share that holiday spirit with our wildlife friends. Seeds, nuts, berries, suet, fruit, and peanut butter mixed with evergreens make a beautiful display and tasty treat for birds and other wild critters. They’re fun to make, and even more fun to watch who comes by to visit!

TRY this fun idea for making your own using cookie cutters and a simple birdseed cake recipe here.
