BLACK HISTORY MONTH

White perspectives have long dominated the telling of U.S. history, and the country's stories of conservation and relationships with outdoor environments are no exception. As February wraps up, here are a few excellent books to check out and authors to keep reading, all year round.

Black Nature: Four Centuries of African American Nature Poetry, edited by Camille Dungy, is an award-winning anthology of 180 poems from 93 black poets across generations.

A Terrible Thing to Waste: Environmental Racism and its Assault on the American Mind, by Harriet Washburn, is a powerful reported look at the devastating consequences of environmental racism.

The Book of Delights, by Ross Gay, is a gorgeous collection of short, lyric essays written across one year.

Don't forget that the voices you read, support, and share makes a difference!
COURSE HIGHLIGHT: CONSERVATION ACROSS BOUNDARIES
Summer Semester | June 16 - July 27, 2022

This month, we're highlighting our Summer Semester, Wild Rockies: Conservation Across Boundaries course! You may have seen information on our website or other WRFI materials including portions of this course that usually take place in parts of Alberta and British Columbia, Canada. Yet last summer, 2021, due to ongoing restrictions and uncertainty surrounding US - Canada border crossings, we explored a new route that kept us in the states. Although the route has changed, the credits earned and academic themes explored remained largely unchanged. And the course was a great success!

Our modified itinerary focuses on Montana's Yellowstone to Yukon region between the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and the Crown of the Continent landscape. We begin on foot backpacking in the Snowcrest range, then venture east into Yellowstone National Park. From there we head west to the Rocky Mountain Front and into the Bob Marshall Wilderness, meeting with ranchers, tribal leaders and other community members as we head north to regions in and around Glacier National Park. Finally, the course wraps up with a kayak trip down the Lower Flathead River. While we missed our partners in Canada in 2021, this new route offered many fresh opportunities for partnership, collaboration and learning with new partners around Montana. As uncertainty around border crossing remains ongoing, we're looking forward to running this Montana-based itinerary once again in 2022. Stay tuned for more details on the website soon!

In the meantime, feel free to drop a call to the office for more info or check out some stories straight from the field on the WRFI blog, such as Conservation Across Boundaries 2021 student Sam Eberhard's blog post, The Paradox of the Highlands.
