Parent Education Topic: College Planning Overview and information in Naviance

We are excited to invite you to an informative session hosted by the DVHS PTSA, focusing on college planning. Our very own Trish Theobald, the knowledgeable and dedicated college career center advisor, will have a visual presentation for us all. 

Trish Theobald will provide valuable insights into the college planning process, offering guidance and important information to support your student's journey towards higher education. One key aspect she will cover is the use of Naviance, a powerful tool available through our college career center.

Topics to be covered include:

• Overview of the college application process
• Understanding the role of Naviance in college planning
• Navigating resources and tools within Naviance

This session is designed to equip you with the knowledge and resources needed to actively participate in your student's college planning journey. Don't miss this opportunity to gain valuable insights and ask any questions you may have about the college application process.

DVHS Counseling Department

The DVHS Counseling team presented Parent/Caretaker Information Nights over the last two weeks to provide insight into the course selection process and how to prepare your student for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year. Presentation slides for each grade level are now posted on the DVHS Counseling website.  Corresponding information is presented to all students in their English classes, and counselors will meet with them one-on-one.

SRVUSD Parent/Caregiver Seminar Series



This spring, through our partnership with C.O.P.E. Family Support Center, SRVUSD parents/caregivers can attend a series of virtual seminars. The next seminar, Mental Health for Teens and How to Support Them, will be on Monday, April 15th. Learn more about each seminar and register today

DVHS Senior Wildcat

DVHS Senior Wildcat is set for Friday, March 22, at 7:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. Senior Wildcat is a community event that showcases the Dougherty Valley seniors in a fun and enthusiastic event. This year's theme is "Straight from the Big Screen," where you will see senior duos dressed up as classic cartoon characters to compete in a series of games, dances, and acts to see who gets the title of 2024 Senior Wildcat. This show has been a DVHS tradition since the school opened, and we are excited to continue it. Students and families can buy tickets using the DVHS webstore under the "fundraisers tab." Junior/Senior Prom

Spring is just around the corner, so Junior/Senior Prom can’t be far behind. Prom tickets are on sale now through the Wildcat Webstore. This year’s theme is Enchanted Forest and will be at the California Academy of Sciences from 7-11 p.m., Saturday, April 13.  Get all the details here.

DVHS PTSA Exceptional Education Community Events

1. Please join us for coffee with DVHS PTSA Exceptional Ed Committee and department head Magan Fortayon and Assistant Principal Bob Spain on March 20, 2024 at 7:45am in DVHS Library. This is a great opportunity for parents and caregivers of students with IEPs, 504s or other learning differences to connect with other families and SPED Department personnels. Multicultural Staff Luncheon sponsored by DVHS PTSA

The DVHS PTSA Hospitality Committee is pleased to organize a multicultural potluck lunch for our awesome teachers and staff on Thursday, March 28. DVHS PTSA 2024-2025 Executive Board Election

Each year, we elect DVHS PTSA executive board to serve one-year terms, beginning July 1st and ending June 30th.

DVHS PTSA Elections will take place on March 19th @ the PTSA meeting. The Nominating Committee for the DVHS PTSA met several times in January and February 2024 to consider all eligible candidates for the 2024-2025 term of office. The nominating committee presented the slate of officers for the association’s consideration:

2024 DVHS Athletic Booster Scholarships - application deadline is April 21

Applications for the DVHS Athletic Boosters Annual Senior Scholarship are now OPEN for DVHS graduating class of 2024 who plan on continuing their education at a community, technical, or a traditional 4-year college. Seniors who participated on a Varsity DVHS sports team during their time at DVHS with an unweighted 3.0 GPA are eligible to apply. Application information and links are available on the DVHS Athletic Boosters website. Application and coach recommendations are due by Sunday, April 21 at 11:59 p.m. No exceptions!

DVHS Athletic Booster

Thank you to all of you who attended our DVHS Athletic Boosters Crab Feed. We hope you all enjoyed yourselves. The event was a HUGE success and your support will directly impact our student athletes and athletic programs. We also want to thank our team parents who helped put together amazing team baskets, and all the volunteers who helped collect donations or helped on the day of Crab Feed. We THANK YOU!!!

Spring Team Donations

Thank you to all our parents who have already made donations to our athlete’s teams. Your team donations go directly to support the expenses in the team budget, so please donate! Any programs that hits the 75% received category will receive a bonus of $500 from Athletic Boosters. To run successful programs our teams need to hit their budgets. Please talk to your team parent if you have any questions about your team budget for the season.

• The statistics are public, yet the family/player info is anonymous. The data is shared with the coaches so they know their program funds and standings by %. Donations by player name are 100% private and maintained ONLY by the DVHS Bookkeepers.

Music Boosters

Music Booster Board Meetings are held monthly in the band room from 6:30 to 8:00 PM. During the meetings, we discuss upcoming events, identify any support needed, and help make DVHS music program the best-in-class. All parents are welcome! Our next meeting is on Monday, March 25

Education and The California State Budget

The California State Constitution requires the Governor to submit a budget to the Legislature by January 10th of each year. The Legislative Analysis Office (LAO), a non-partisan government agency, prepares an analysis and overview of the budget. The budget is then reviewed by both the Senate Budget Committee and the Assembly Budget Committee. The Senate and Assembly each produce a budget bill which is utilized by the governor to produce a revised budget in May. The legislature is required to pass a budget by midnight, June 15th, each year. You may recall that this rarely happens.

The largest share of the State general fund spending supports education. General Fund revenue comes from personal income tax, corporation tax, and sales and use tax.  The majority of K-12 funding comes from the State and is allocated by the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). The Legislature determines the LCFF grant levels in the annual state budget. In 1988 the voters approved Proposition 98 (also known as the "Classroom Instructional Improvement and Accountability Act,") which constitutionally guarantees a minimal level of funding for schools based on the General Fund revenue.  

The 2024-2025 proposed budget estimate of general fund revenue is significantly lower than originally estimated in the 2023-24 budget. Consequently the proposed budget assumes a significant decrease in the amount guaranteed by Proposition 98.  Governor Newsom assumes the state will have a $37.8 billion deficit over the next three years. The Legislative Analyst’s Office (LAO) predicted a $68 billion deficit, $30 billion greater than the governor's predicted deficit. 

The K-12 funding is 26.2% of the proposed 2024-2025  State Budget. Funding for K-12 schools and community colleges would be reduced by $11.3 billion over three years (2022-2025). The proposed budget includes the following expenditures:

• $6 million to develop ways of addressing student absence.
• $20 million to support implementation of the new math framework.
• $25 million to train teachers to screen for literacy problems, including dyslexia, something California State PTA strongly supported.
• $7 million to support inquiry-based science instruction.
• $300 million for the state’s poorest schools.
• $122 million to increase funding for universal school meals.
• $5 million to increase support for the California Cradle-to-Career Data System.
• $500 million to convert school buses to zero-emission.

The Superintendent Search Survey is now open! SRVUSD’s Board of Education is asking for the entire community’s help in selecting our next Superintendent. To ensure this is a collaborative and inclusive process, the Board is providing an anonymous online survey and encouraging everyone’s participation. This is an opportunity for the Board to receive input from students, staff, parents/caregivers, and the wider San Ramon Valley community.

Women’s History Month

San Ramon Valley Unified School District recognizes the month of March as Women’s History Month. Women of every race and ethnic background have contributed to our country’s triumphs and accomplishments in countless ways and continue to play critical roles in the economic, cultural, and social spheres of our nation. Women of diverse backgrounds have served as leaders at the forefront of every major progressive social change movement and although their efforts have been overlooked or undervalued in the past, they hold an important place in the body of American and world history.

Arts Education Month

San Ramon Valley Unified School District recognizes the month of March as Arts Education Month. Education in the arts is an indispensable part of basic education for all students to enhance their understanding of the world and to develop to their full potential. Instruction in the arts helps children foster creativity, self-expression, and discipline. The arts are also important repositories of culture and experience. SRVUSD is proud to focus on the value of arts education, especially during the month of March.

Prescription Drug Abuse Awareness Month

San Ramon Valley Unified School District recognizes the month of March as Prescription Drug Abuse Awareness Month. Prescription medications such as stimulants, sedatives, and opioids hold powerful medical benefits however can have serious consequences and additive risks. Overdoses are on the rise in our community, county and nation. SRVUSD participates in the CA Department of Health Services’ Naloxone Distribution Project and district schools have a stock of the opioid overdose rescue medication Naloxone. SRVUSD encourages drug abuse awareness, education, and prevention of all citizens.
