Engineering Summer Program for Teachers Includes Students
The Engineering Summer Program for Teachers (ESP4T) is a weeklong professional development workshop hosted at the University of Wyoming campus focusing on the use of Physical Computing as a teaching tool to engage K-12 students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

This year’s ESP4T offered the opportunity to all teacher participants, to bring high achieving 6th to 12th grade students to participate in the workshop. The four students chosen were top performing students in the clubs, Science Olympiad, and MESA. They have participated in the club since 9th grade and during the last three years have competed and placed in regional and state competitions. These students are also members of DHS Robotics team and have competed for BEST and FIRST Robotics competition. Lastly, these students have background in engineering, coding, and programming that they can share and contribute beneficial not only to us, but also to other participants in the workshop.

One of our goal in joining the program is, at the end of the program, student participants, will share and demonstrate what they learned and experienced to teach other members of the club. In addition, the student will showcase a project or module for the student body of Deming High School, Red Mountain Middle School, and Deming Intermediate School. The showcase will help promote and encourage students to explore post-secondary courses after high school.

The ESP4T was held July 18, 2022 through July 22. 2022. During the first 2 days, participants learned the basic about circuits and started building projects using Arduino Microcontroller. Some of the projects in the session were blinking LED lights, building Ohm meter, and a Voltmeter. Students and teachers were excited to end the day by building a cylon circuit (Battlestar Galactica) using 4-8 LEDs, resistors, jumpers/cables, and Arduino microcontroller.

The following day, participants attended different modules/sessions of their choice where they build laser cat toy, theremin project, adaptive cruise control for car, automatic watering system, color car, Arduino music, digital dice, tetherball, sun tracker, coin game, derby timer, and language learning. All modules were created by the students of the University of Wyoming College of Engineering.

In between, college students demonstrated their engineering skills while presenting their group projects. One group presented how to fly multiple drones simultaneously, using Raspberry Pi microcontroller programmed with Thony Phyton. Another group showcased what they called a “Pi Car”, which again was programmed using Thony Phyton programming, with multiple sensors to operate as a remote controlled, or an independent car utilizing the cruise control. The last group presented a virtual reality device that enable the user to manipulate and explore, the different parts of the human body. The presentations excited both the teachers and students and they look forward to exploring and making projects using another microcontroller, the RaspberryPi.
The RaspberryPi is a more complicated microcontroller than the Arduino microcontroller. The RaspberryPi works like a personal computer and can be directly connected to a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. This device also connects to school or home networks and laptops through the ethernet port. Lastly, the improved version of the RaspberryPi can connect to Wi-Fi networks.

The RaspberryPi activity started with a module for traffic light code where participants gained a better understanding of how traffic lights work in the street and how the cross-push button works in relation to the traffic lights activity and function. The interesting part of the RaspberryPi session is when participants learned how to fly drones using DroneBlocks and gather weather information of a certain area. In addition, the participants learned how to control a PiCar (RaspberryPiCar) in the three different functions: (1) using the laptop/computer as the remote control, so the PiCar can move forward, backward, left, and right. (2) the PiCar, with the use of sensors, can be programmed to follow a certain path using the colors black and white.

As an appreciation for the student’s participation, the head organizer of the workshop gave each student one PiCar to keep, and students or teachers can use them to showcase in our schools. Our students were extremely grateful to participate in the program.

The engineering summer training program made a huge impact to both the teacher and student participants. The engineering summer program organizers would like to grow the number of participants at next year’s event and hope that students would consider exploring the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Our clubs are hoping to bring more students to next school year’s engineering summer program. If you would like to join Science Olympiad and/ or MESA, please contact Mr. Belen at reynaldo.belen@demingps.org.

As we begin a new school year and Deming Public Schools welcomes new and returning students, we ask for the help of parents and the community in encouraging students to attend school on the days they are healthy and physically able to attend.

The Department of Assessment, Research, and Student Success is focused on getting students in the classrooms and ready to learn. Student Success Liaisons and mentors are assigned to schools across the district to identify students at risk of becoming chronically absent and to identify and remove barriers that may prevent students from regularly attending class.

The New Mexico Public Education Department collects and analyzes district and school attendance data to calculate chronic absenteeism. A student that is chronically absent is defined as missing school for any reason for ten percent or more of the school year. For Deming Public Schools this means that students who miss more than 17 school days are considered chronically absent.

Curving chronic absenteeism is important to DPS as students who fall into this category are at higher risk at having low and failing grades, repeat grade levels, and have a lower graduation rate than their peers. Research has proven good attendance and achievement go hand in hand. Through improving attendance across the district, DPS hopes to reduce the achievement gap and increase school performance.
