The Kansas State Polytechnic Flight Team attended the National Intercollegiate Flying Association Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference, also known as NIFA SAFECON, Oct. 14-17, battling six other universities in their region in both ground and flight events to move on to nationals.

Assistant chief flight instructor receives community honor for military service
Brandy Shaw, assistant chief flight instructor at K-State Polytechnic and 2010 professional pilot alumna, has received this week's Comfort Heating and Air Salute to Service honor. Shaw served with the Kansas Army National Guard as a UH60 Blackhawk helicopter mechanic in Iraq from 2006 to 2007, and continued as a UH60 helicopter crew chief while attending the Polytechnic Campus. Each week, Comfort Heating and Air salutes a member of the local military, either active duty or a veteran, and places their name in a drawing for the Dec. 30 Chiefs game. To learn more, click here.

Scholarship opportunities
All Students
The 2019-2020 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is available now. This is the application required for pell grants, federal student loans, federal parent loans and federal work-study. This application will cover the Fall 2019 and Spring 2020 semesters. Priority date to apply is December 1 www.fafsa.ed.gov
Aviation Students
The Janice Barden Scholarship is open to any aviation student who is a sophomore or higher with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher. The award will be a minimum of $1,000. Deadline: November 30, 2018https://www.nbaa.org/prodev/scholarships/barden/
The Dan L. Meisinger Sr Memorial Learn to Fly Scholarship is a $2,500 award to an aviation student. It is for initial or primary flight training. Must have a 3.0 or better GPA. Aviation Maintenance Students

VFW "Sport Clips Help a Hero Scholarship" - Scholarships up to $5,000 for the spring semester are available to current active duty or Guard/Reserves or veterans. A completed FAFSA is required. Deadline:  November 15, 2018 . Apply online at  https://www.vfw.org/scholarship/
Employee Tuition Assistance
Some K-State employees may be eligible for employee tuition assistance. Up to 3 credit hours of tuition a semester is possible. Must be a full-time (0.9 FTE or above), benefits-eligible position. For more information, visit http://www.k-state.edu/sfa/manage/forms/eta1.pdf .
Dependent/Spouse Grant
Dependents and spouses of full-time (0.9 FTE or above), benefits eligible, regular appointment employees may qualify for the dependent/spouse grant – up to 7 hours for full-time, undergraduate dependents and 3 hours for spouses and graduate dependents. Volunteer Opportunities
Upward Bound's Trick-or-treat So Others Can Eat food drive Oct. 19-31
The Upward Bound program at K-State Polytechnic is helping collect canned and non-perishable food items for the campus's Cats' Corner and the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank. They have added collection boxes around the campus and at local Dillons grocery stores so that faculty, staff, students and the community can contribute. The initiative is called Trick-or-treat So Others Can Eat and runs Oct. 19-31. Contact Ingrid Pohl at ingridp@ksu.edu or 785-826-2981 with questions.
