Middle School

The Courage Retreat® by Youth Frontiers is a fun, dynamic, character-development experience for seventh-grade students. On Thursday, February 13, NLS 7th graders participated in activities & small group work led by high energy facilitators that inspired students to use courage to do the right thing and make responsible decisions despite their fears.

As a district, one of our Strategic Plan goals is to maximize academic achievement in a personalized learning environment resulting in all students graduating career, college, and life ready, which is why the district developed our community’s Portrait of a Graduate. This activity showcases Global Citizenship and Perseverance. Global citizens value and embrace diverse cultures and unique perspectives through mutual respect, open dialogue, and empathy. They also contribute and take action to make the world a better place. Our students exhibit perseverance through a commitment in achieving success despite difficulty, opposition, and/or failure. They respond productively to feedback, setbacks and criticism utilizing a growth mindset and embrace the idea that failure is a first attempt in learning and quickly pivot to keep moving forward.

Congratulations to our R.O.A.R Award recipients for the month of January!

Carmen was nominated for Attitude. She is one of the kindest students I have had the opportunity to work with. She is always supportive and I have not seen her this year without a smile on her face, no matter what the circumstance is. She has a great attitude towards absolutely everything. She exemplifies all areas of ROAR but her attitude shines through!

Theodore was nominated for attitude. Theo's attitude in class this year has been nothing less than amazing. I wish I could nominate him for all four areas of ROAR! Theo is always ready to roll in class with a smile, and will help anyone that asks.

Rebekah was nominated for attitude. Bekah is an outstanding student who shows a positive attitude every day. Rebekah's class work and her generosity is above and beyond. We appreciate her sense of humor, kindness towards others, and the way she is willing to jump in and help anyone.

Evalina was nominated for ownership. Evalina shows great ownership and respect for her studies and peers. She is positive and encouraging to others and always does her best work. Evalina helps make NLS a great place!

Prairie Woods

Prairie Woods Elementary participated in Global School Play Day on February 5, 2025. During Global Play Day our students were given more time for free play without the use of screens, structured games, or adult direction. The idea is to let children explore their creativity, problem-solving skills, and social interactions in an unstructured and spontaneous environment.

Thank you all so much for your support for the 2nd grade program. In case you are interested, here is a link to the video Ms. Melody made, sending her a huge shout out for her help!

We had a very busy month at Cub Kids Preschool! The Village Children's Museum brought their mobile planetarium to Prairie Meadows! Our preschoolers and Stop by and Play families took a journey through space right in the gym.

We were joined by our moms, aunts, grandmas and special friends for Muffins in the Morning. It was a fun morning of muffins, coffee, crafts, and play. Our preschoolers love when special guests are able to join them at school! We are looking forward to Donuts with Dudes in a few weeks.

Dr. Kirby Johnson from Green Lake Dental visited us to talk about dental health! We learned about healthy and unhealthy food for our teeth, the importance of brushing, and how often to brush! Every student went home with a new toothbrush and toothpaste!

Your Donation is Worth Double During the Dollar for Dollar Match Campaign

The overall mission of the New London-Spicer Educational Foundation is to enhance the quality of education in our school district by helping to fund programs for the benefit of all NLS students.

Preparing our students for college, career, and life after high school was a focus of the Foundation last year. Funds were awarded to the Family and Consumer Science classes to help support the project-based, experiential, and student-guided learning that occurs. This course builds an essential knowledge base for all students whether they pursue the Culinary Arts and/or raise a family. We also supported an Elementary Robotics grant to enhance our STEM classes. These tools are used for coding, sequencing, estimation, problem-solving, and fostering a love of robotics. STEM is a part of the elementary specialist classes.

We feel it is important to support innovative ways of learning that prepare our young people to make their mark on the world by utilizing new technology, exploring the arts, improving math and reading skills, and increasing the knowledge base of career and technical fields.

With your continued support we have provided over $150,000 to the NLS school district investing in engaging materials and innovative opportunities accelerating our students’ education above and beyond the standard. This year all donations (up to $50K) to our STEAM endowment will be generously matched by Bob and Connie Dickerson through their $1 for $1 Match Campaign!

Please consider giving a year-end tax-deductible gift towards our match campaign and support grant initiatives and merit scholarships for years to come! All donations are accepted with gratitude and excitement! How do I donate? Make checks payable to the NLS Educational Foundation and return by mail (PO BOX 58, New London, MN 56273) or make an online donation through our website: www.nls.k12.mn.us/foundationdonation
