Happy New Year

On January 9, 2023, at the NLS School Board meeting, the following newly elected members were inducted; Del Brouwer, Darryl Nelson, and Laura Nelson. Reelected school board member Mark Peterson was also inducted to begin his renewed term.  The new board set their 2023 meeting calendar which will be as follows; All regular school board meetings will normally be held on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month with a start time of 4:30 p.m. Meetings will be held in the District Office Conference Room (101 4th Ave SW, New London, MN) and available via Zoom. To view the 2023 School Board Calendar, click here.

The school board also voted to use Tuesday, February 21, 2023, as our snow make-up day.

  • What does that mean? On Tuesday, February 21, 2023, NLS students and staff will report to school for a normal school day.
  • What if we have more inclement weather days? If we experience additional snow days before the February 21 date, the board may be able to use our remaining potential snow make-up day, which is Monday, February 20. If closures happen after that date, the school board will evaluate the remaining calendar to decide when the make-up time will occur.
  • ReminderThe recent inclement weather, utilized all five of our state allocated eLearning days. Any future school closures during this school year will be traditional snow days.

Class of 2020 Gifts Future Students

The pandemic of 2020 greatly impacted us all, but a particular group of students, Class of 2020, unfortunately missed out on some once in a lifetime milestones of their high school careers. From a virtual prom to extracurricular seasons ending abruptly to a graduation held distantly spaced in our high school parking lot these students manage to display gumption and perseverance. Now three years later they are proving once again what an inspirational group they are!

Unable to use the money they fundraised for a senior class trip, the New London-Spicer Class of 2020 has donated the money to provide functional seating in the High School Student Center. While this area was not able to be used at the end of their senior year it is an area where students gather with classmates throughout the day. The new furniture has been installed along with a plaque. The plaque reads, On behalf of the Class of 2020, who were unable to come together at the end of their senior year due to the pandemic this space and the furnishings are dedicated to future classes as a place to gather, reflect, and enjoy their time together at NLS.

Wright County Conference Honor Band and Choir Accepts Eight NLS Students

Honor Band and Choir is anannual event that the Wright County Conference hosts. Last year, the band started up again (post-covid) and this year the choir joined. Students across the conference are nominated for the WCC honor band and choir by their directors based on interest and talent. Selected students prepared pieces ahead of time and had the opportunity to rehearse with collegiate level directors. Throughout the day students participated in full group rehearsals and spent time in sectional practices. The Wright County Conference Honor Band and Choir event was held at Mound Westonka high school. The day concluded with a wonderful concert.

The five New London-Spicer choir students selected were; Jack Barnery, Victoria DeBernardis, Harper Hoffman, Julia Severtson, and Jaden Smith. The three band students selected were; Jackson Barber, Samuel Gamez, and Jordan Proehl. Congratulations to all!

Middle School Minutes

On January 10, the New London-Spicer Educational Foundation presented a $250 check to the NLS YES (Youth Ecological Solutions) Club gifted by a local donor. YES Club is composed of 7th and 8th grade students that participate in meaningful environmental activities and projects. Over the years, the students have helped to create and maintain our school district's nature area.

When asked what the money will be used for, YES Advisor Marni Paffrath shared, "We'll put the money to good use with some of our upcoming projects. We have a Mill Pond area clean-up this spring, the students are working on YES week for the elementary students in April, and stenciling storm drains in the community."

Thank you to the many generous donors and supporters of New London-Spicer students! Our schools and students thrive because of the time you give volunteering, the gifts given, and continued support!

4th Grade Buddies

Before winter break, our 4th Grade buddies assisted our Kindergarten students in making gifts for their parents. The snowmen were the height of students with fingerprints for faces. Our students love making gifts for others but they especially loved working with the older helpers on the project.

Prairie Meadows Preschool

This month, at Prairie Meadows Early Childhood Learning Center in Spicer, MN, our preschoolers are learning about snow and ice. The students are having lots of fun playing in the snow on the playground and in their classrooms! Pictured are two students from Miss Stacy's class painting with snow.

New London-Spicer Educational Foundation awarded $1,000 to Tricia Lilleberg, NLS Community Education Coordinator to enhance our school aged after school programming called PALS. Tricia shared, "We have over 80 kids in our after school programming and more that participate in our summer childcare and PreK programming. Our newly implemented schedule allows for better safety protocols and is structured around engagement in rotations. Using these funds, we will purchase STEM activities that can be used during the rotations," she finished, "these activities will help develop both gross and fine motor skills." The use of STEM activities in small group rotations will also increase relationship building between our staff and students.
