A special thank you to all the businesses that donated pumpkins or joined us to play games and hand out candy to all the trick or treaters!

NLS Educational Foundation awards $783.20 for a Special Education Functional Skills Grant | |
The New London-Spicer Educational Foundation awarded $783.20 to Crystal Lenz, Special Education teacher, for her grant titled, Functional Skills in Special Education.
The goal for this Functional Skills project is to create a more innovative curriculum in New London-Spicer’s Middle School Special Education program. Mrs. Crystal Lenz’ students spend four years, from grade 5-8, working towards functional everyday living skills; functional math, reading, and other life skills needed to be successful. Each special education student requires an individualized curriculum to fit their IEP (Individualized Education Plan). The Environmental Print curriculum is a standards-based language arts curriculum to help students with significant cognitive disabilities. Students with mild to moderate cognitive disabilities will also benefit from using this program. A compelling aspect of this curriculum is that both verbal and non-verbal students will be able to use it because of the different scripted lessons, visuals and manipulatives that the curriculum provides. This curriculum is a year-long program with 160 lessons.
| | | |
Each year, Mrs. Lenz has approximately 10 students on her caseload. The students' disabilities range from severe-profound delayed development and/or mild to moderate cognitive disabilities. With a wide variety of different leveled learners, this curriculum will benefit several of the students each year. These students will work on academic and functional goals addressed in their IEP (Individualized Education Plan) one-on-one with a para/teacher and in small groups throughout the school day.
“This curriculum will be a wonderful addition as a resource for teaching everyday life skills along with reading skills to all levels of learners,” Lenz continued, “It will enhance our work by offering tailored support and accommodation for students with disabilities.”
Looking into the future of the program, Lenz believes her students will be able to engage in more robust learning experience as the new material meets students at their level of ability. By incorporating the Functional Skills curriculum, our middle school special education program should see academic growth and success.
For a limited amount of time, donations made to the Educational Foundation's endowment will be matched $1 to $1 by the Dickerson's Match Campaign. To donate, checks can be mailed to NLS Ed. Foundation, PO BOX 58, New London, MN 56273. To donate online, click here. New London-Spicer Educational Foundation is a non-profit organization filed under the 501c3 tax status.
