Wildfire Smoke Exposure

Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), employers are required to take all precautions reasonable in the circumstances for the protection of a worker. This includes protecting workers from the hazards associated with poor outdoor air quality that could pose a risk to workers working in and around the workplace.

The Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) have released a FAQ addressing concerns around outdoor air quality.

The Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers (OHCOW) have released a 4-page infographic, which covers the signs and symptoms of wildfire smoke exposure as well as tips for prevention when working indoors and outdoors. Download the infographic below.

Controls & Best Practices

  • When driving in wildfire smoke, keep your windows closed. When operating air-conditioning, ensure it is set on recirculating mode.
  • If working outdoors, consider the following:
  • Minimize exposure to the smoke as much as possible. Try to reschedule outdoor work if possible.
  • Avoid tasks in which physical exertion is required, or reduce the amount of physical exertion required.
  • Establish a “clean air” area, where workers can take breaks from working in the smoke.
  • Consider workers wearing an N95 respirator. These respirators can protect against the particulate found in the smoke. Ensure workers are fitted and trained in the use, care, and maintenance of these respirators.
  • If working indoors,
  • Ensure the HVAC system is running properly
  • Consider running portable air cleaners, with HEPA filters, in rooms
  • Ensure windows are closed
  • Regularly monitor air quality conditions, by consulting the Air Quality Health Index for your region.
  • Do not forget about heat stress. During the wildfire season, temperatures tend to be on the warmer side. If working outdoors, ensure workers are aware of the signs and symptoms of heat stress.
