Those of you who think lifetime animal disease traceability is a bad idea might want to stop reading now. Then again, there are folks who aren’t happy unless they’re mad. If that’s you, read on. I’m pleased to make your day.

And by all means, tell me how wrong I am. Those comments are good for comic relief.

Yes, that’s harsh. But it’s time for everyone in the beef business—including (perhaps especially) those who aren’t happy unless they’re mad about something—to get square with reality.Here’s your reality: At some point in time, we will have a nationwide, lifetime animal disease traceability system.

First Wisconsin Case of EIA Confirmed

MADISON — The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) confirms that a horse and a mule on the same premises in Taylor County have tested positive for equine infectious anemia (EIA). These are Wisconsin’s first confirmed cases of EIA in almost 15 years. There is no treatment for EIA, therefore to prevent transmitting it, infected animals are humanely euthanized.

Biosecurity: It Takes Everyone

For Jarrod and Shari Bakker of Dike, Iowa, understanding “pig germs” is an important part of their operation’s success. Not only do the Bakkers run a 2,400 head contract wean-to-finish barn and have a herd of 50 showpig sows, but they also have three young children. Shari says helping the kids understand biosecurity and how germs are spread is critical to their operation’s success. Their wean-to-finish barns are located six miles from where their showpigs are located.

Farm Bill Funds to Support Animal Disease Prevention

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is announcing initial plans to carry out new animal health activities using resources provided by the 2018 Farm Bill. Section 12101 of the 2018 Farm Bill established a three-part program to comprehensively support animal disease prevention and management. The bill included funding to create two new programs: the National Animal Vaccine and Veterinary Countermeasures Bank (vaccine bank) and the National Animal Disease Preparedness and Response Program (NADPRP). It also expands funding opportunities for the existing National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN).
