What to Watch During the Texas Legislative Session

February 2025 Newsletter

Every two years, the Texas Legislature gets together to consider and pass bills that touch virtually every aspect of life. Many of those bills impact Texans with disabilities.

The latest session started in January and ends in June. Here are just a few of the many issues we've been following that might impact you:

  • Some people with disabilities rely on community attendants to help them live independently. But community attendant wages remain low which has caused a severe shortage of these critical workers.
  • As Texas addresses its housing shortage, policies that include affordable options can ensure all Texans have a place to call home.
  • Texas lawmakers will vote on the state budget which includes funding for special education services. Also, school vouchers (Education Savings Accounts) that will help pay for private school tuition may also impact students with disabilities.
  • Many Texans with disabilities who want to work rely on our state's vocational rehabilitation program. The budget for this program will be determined in this legislative session.
  • All citizens who are eligible to vote should be able to exercise that right. However, voting in Texas may not be accessible for some people with disabilities who are eligible to cast a ballot.
