Simon Peter replied, "Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words that give eternal life? We believe and we know you are the Holy one of God." John 6:68,69, NLT
All they did was walk into a local 7-eleven to get a drink and a snack after a long day's work. But they never walked out. Instead, one young man’s body laid on a stretcher waiting for a coroner’s van, while the other young man’s body laid on a stretcher waiting for an ambulance.
This was one of the news stories that flashed across my TV screen last night as I watched the evening news. News so devastating that even I, a woman who considers herself a mature Christian, had to ask, "Why, God?” “Why did another senseless shooting occur killing innocent people? How do I keep believing and helping others to believe you still care for us and the state of our world, when it seems like you don’t?"
When several of Jesus’ disciples realized he would not be the long-awaited messiah they had been looking for to deliver them from Roman oppression, they deserted him. So Jesus asked the disciples closest to him the following question: "Will you go too?" And Peter replied: "Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words that give eternal life.” (John 6:68, NLT)
This is the same question Jesus may be posing to you today as you watch Christians abandon their faith because they don't believe in a God who seems to ignore the problems occurring in our world. " Will you go too? “Will you succumb to the world’s philosophy that my Father has lost control?” Will you lean on your own understanding in trying to interpret what is happening in the world and the reasons why?” " Will you stop believing my Father still loves and cares deeply for his children, when you cannot trace his hand? “
“Or will you, like Peter, choose to stay?”
Sharing the Word,
Jeaninne
Today's prayer: Father, when I can't trace your hands regarding all of the problems that are occurring in the world, help me to keep believing, by faith, that you are still in control. Amen.
