William R. Boone High School Community Brief
Monday, December 11, 2023
Boone High School Community Member,

This week our Braves will be engaged with PM2 and CFE Semester 1 assessments. We will be operating from a modified bell schedule on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (below). While on-time daily attendance is essential every school day, this week will be critical. We want all of our Braves to perform at their very best, so plenty of rest the night before an exam followed by breakfast the day of an exam will give students a natural advantage.

We have two very special events scheduled this week to ring in the holiday season: Tuesday evening's Winter Band Concert and Thursday evening's Winter Chorus Concert. Both of these will be excellent performances and I encourage you to try to make it out to one or both - TICKETS. In addition to our winter concerts, our winter sports teams have have home games every school day this week except for Monday. Our families certainly have some excellent entertainment opportunities at a great value this week, so please make plans to join us!
Our community stepped forward to help a large number of students have a better holiday season through their donations. In this issue is a message of appreciation from Ms. Melissa Graham, Boone Outfitters Chair, to the community. Here is yet another Boone success story, one which will help to create some memorable moments at this special time of year. Thank you to our volunteers who helped on the day of the event (above).
Braves, please remember that Monday is Day #6 of our 15 Days of Cheer—Candy Cane Lane!—as we continue to celebrate the holiday season. Enjoy each of these spirit days and do your best on the assessments this week. You have done the work and your teachers have you prepared. Here is an opportunity to demonstrate how much you have learned during the first semester, which is quite considerable.

Thank you for reading and I hope to see you at an evening concert performance or at a game this week!

Forever Brave,

Dr. Maestre
Principal

With Great Appreciation at the Holidays
Boone community,

Your generosity this holiday season has been incredible! It is clear that we live amongst people who want all students to feel JOY this holiday season. On Thursday and Friday, approximately 100 Boone students were able to do some free holiday shopping, enjoy a catered lunch by Pig Floyd’s and receive the donated kindness of our community. Many of these students chose gifts for their siblings and loved ones instead of themselves. Beautiful selflessness. I’d also like to thank the many volunteers who worked the event and spread some holiday cheer! Again, your generosity is very appreciated this holiday season. Thank you for your continued support.

Take care,

Melissa Graham

Campus Safety Message
Boone High School families,

I want to let you know about an important enhancement to school security.
After winter break, our school will begin using the OPENGATE weapons detection system to screen all students and visitors entering our campus during regular school hours. Our school has been randomly selected as one of seven high schools to pilot this technology. OPENGATE not only detects weapons but other contraband not allowed on school property. Anyone identified with contraband will be subject to a secondary screening or search. Any items discovered during the screening or search will be confiscated and could result in school discipline and possible legal consequences.

After winter break I will send more information with a specific date that this will begin at our school. The safety and security of our campus is our top priority and we appreciate your assistance in implementing this new security measure.

Court Procedures in our Law Magnet
Our Court Procedures class is designed to impart students with a thorough understanding of the intricate legal processes that unfold within courtrooms. Within our Law Magnet strand, students actively participate in practical learning. Students recently engaged in an activity revolved around a detailed review and practice of court procedure, with a particular focus on the landmark cases Mallory vs. Smith and Young vs. Gardner. This immersive experience equips students with valuable skills, preparing them for the complexities of real-world legal scenarios.
Mr. Dennis’ students practiced in the Chief Justice Charles T. Wells Courtroom located in his classroom. This classroom environment provides the ideal opportunity for students to engage in courtroom procedures.
College and Career
Are you interested in the field of Construction? Want to learn more about it or possibly get a job in the field?

Construction Career Days is a one of a kind opportunity to explore the dynamic and high-growth transportation construction industry. As more people relocate to or visit Florida, the demand for qualified construction workers grows. The national educational outreach program is designed to foster interest in high school students for a wide variety of skilled construction careers. This field trip is intended for high school juniors and seniors (first preference will be given to seniors as there will be on the spot job offers as well as scholarship opportunities). Here is a link that will help you determine if this trip is right for you. If you are interested in the field trip please come see Ms. Borden in student services. Please know that there are limited seats and students will be added on a first come basis.
Our Braves should know that construction is a + $1 trillion industry which has multiple sectors. They vary in size and growth. Here is the forecast for US growth and the value of construction starts by sector for 2024:
* Dollars in billions (e.g. 2024 residential forecast = 405.6 or $405.6 billion in construction starts)

National Apprenticeship Week
National Apprenticeship Week is a week-long celebration. It is a chance to bring together businesses and apprentices across the country to shine a light on the positive impact that apprenticeships make to individuals, businesses and the wider economy. Orange Technical College goes a step further and hosts an Apprenticeship Showcase for the high school seniors and the Orange county community as a whole.

Boone HS decided to take 25 seniors to this wonderful event. Our seniors had the opportunity to speak with professionals in more than 15 programs, explore career paths and discover how to get started in a fantastic career. They also had a chance to experience hands-on demonstrations and hear about what it takes to be successful. The students had a great time and learned so much. We will definitely attend next year.

Food for Thought
1) Poverty rates fall with greater education:
Footnote for our Braves. The chart above compares the level of poverty people face depending upon their educational attainment for those living in Chicago vs. the national average (the research was compiled for the Illinois Policy Institute). In either case, whether it be Chicago or the U.S. overall, poverty rates drop precipitously with each higher level of educational attainment.

2) The November jobs report released on Friday morning shows the same pattern since the start of the 21st century—unemployment rates are lower with more education:
November 2023 unemployment rates:
No high school diploma - 6.3%
High school graduate - 4.1%
Some college or AA - 2.8%
Bachelor's or higher - 2.1%
* The gray bars in the chart are periods of US economic recession
