Original Flagship Sketch by David Macaulay
Award-winning author-illustrator David Macaulay has a deeply personal relationship with the SS United States that began in childhood, when he and his family immigrated to the U.S. aboard the Big U. In his 2019 book, Crossing on Time: Steam Engines, Fast Ships, and a Journey to the New World , Macaulay documents his personal relationship with America's Flagship. This original sketch offers a magnificent aerial view of the SS United States ' decks. Here are Macaulay's reflections on creating this original artwork:
"This sketch of the forward end of the ship shows continuing work on a number of important elements. I drew the deck order countless times before I had a clear notion of it. Here, I’m focusing on the little pile between the prom deck and the bridge, but the sports deck is still not cooperating. More successful was the forward funnel, here shown under construction or at least before the scaffolding was removed."
Special Remarqued Print by Robert Lloyd
Robert Lloyd is one of the most renowned and celebrated maritime artists of the modern era, with his work displayed the world over. Early Morning Arrival depicts the SS United States returning to New York, her home port through her entire service career. The striking attention to detail — from the ship's beautiful and unmistakable lines to the iconic 1950s New York City skyline — makes this painting especially poignant. This auction is for a 20" x 30" remarqued print (#1 in a series) which includes an original sketch as well as a personal note from the artist.
Original Funnel Sketch by David Macaulay
In his 2019 book, Crossing on Time , David Macaulay renders the Big U's most iconic features in vivid, realistic detail. This second original sketch offers viewers a look inside the SS United States ' signature funnels. Here are Macaulay's reflections on this special piece:
"Trying to understand the interior space of the funnels was a great challenge. In this sketch, you can see the tops of the four shafts leading out of the soot removers before they continue on to the opening in the roof of the funnel. You can also see two of the ship’s three horns. 'Spread back' is a reminder to myself to elongate the somewhat truncated shape."
Special Guided Tour of the SS United States
This is your chance for a once-in-a-lifetime experience: a special guided tour of the SS United States at her current berth in Philadelphia. See this magnificent vessel up close, and learn about her rich history as you walk her decks. It's sure to be a day you'll never forget! Winning bidder also receives an America's Flagship t-shirt and a copy of Crossing on Time by author-illustrator David Macaulay.
