Sunday, February 5th: A Great Hope: The Power of Who We Can Be
With Director of Youth Ministries, Sam Wilson
and Youth Worship Associates

Understanding and appreciating our identities are important steps in loving ourselves, loving each other, and working toward a beloved community. Recent political events show us that our identities can also be used as political tools to incite division, resentment and exclusion. This service will lift up moments of connection across great differences, as it asks us to consider: if I am me, and you are you, then who are we? What is the power of who we can be, and how might this be our great hope in a time wrought with despair? The service will feature members of the Winchester Unitarian Society Youth Group (WUSYG) and liturgy created by authors from a variety of marginalized communities.

As this is the first Sunday of the month, there will be a community conversation after worship. All are welcome!

This Sunday, we Share the Plate with the Muslim Alliance for Sexual and Gender Diversity, the only organization in the U.S. that is exclusively devoted to supporting and empowering LGBTQ Muslims.

Any submissions for the Announcements for this Sunday should be emailed to DYM Sam Wilson: wusyouth@gmail.com

Everybody Choir @ 9:45 AM

Come join the Everybody Choir this Sunday. We will be singing an arrangement of There's a River Flowing Through my Soul. There is room for every one in the choir and you will find the experience easy, joyful, and lots of fun. Please contact Music Director John Kramer at john.kramer@winchesteruu.org with any questions.

Music News.

From the Music Committee:

Thank you for another wonderful night of jazz on Friday, Jan 27th. It was a fun and lively evening enjoyed by over 165 attendees. On March 17th, we will celebrate St. Paddy’s Day with the legendary performer Robbie O’Connell. A native of Waterford, Ireland, Robbie started performing at the age of thirteen. After touring with the Clancy Brothers, he released his first solo album in 1982. He hasn’t stopped since and we are delighted to have him along with fiddler Rose Clancy. Mark your calendar and help us to spread the word about an evening that if bound to be a foot tapping, high-spirited event!  http://www.robbieoconnell.com

The Hymn Sing continues throughout the year on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:15 p.m. in the Meyer Chapel. We come together simply to sing: new hymns, old hymns, hymns from the grey and teal hymnal, hymns people bring in. The possibilities are endless and it will be more fun with you there!

Children's Chorale meets every Tuesday from 6:15 to 7:00 p.m. in the Spirit Play room in the RE wing. This is a wonderfully spirited group of young singers (grades 2-6) who meets weekly to sing, play games, and learn about music. All are welcome and no previous singing experience is necessary. If you know of any young person interested in having a great time while making music, please be in touch with music director John Kramer at john.kramer@winchesteruu.org.

Religious Education

This month, Identity: In our Worship services we will be exploring the theme of identity. "Who am I?" is a question worth asking at any age. "Who are we?" is a question worth asking in any family or group. Our groups will explore the themes raised in each week's Time for All ages. This week, "We are the ones who . . ."

Religious Education Morning: Children start in the Sanctuary and after the Time for all Ages depart for Religious Education Classes. This morning Community Cooks with grades 1-3 in Metcalf kitchen. Grades 4-6 meet upstairs with Ms. Jill, Pre-K/K meet with Ms. Mia and Ms Helena on the main level. Childcare available for babies and toddler in the Playroom.

Afternoon Programs:

Families of 7th and 8th Graders, please note. Your middle schooler is invited to church on the first Sunday of the month. We invite our 7th and 8th graders to sit together in designated pews during the service. This week, Sam Wilson, Director of Youth Ministry (for high school aged youth) will be leading the service along with members of the WUSYG high school youth group.

Feb 5th – “Optical Illusions and the Magic of Meditation”
When stress and emotional unrest overtake our view of life we can feel overwhelmed and stuck. This week will play with the power of perception and experiment with the seemingly magic ability of meditation to shift how we feel, what we think and how we experience our lives.

*WUSYG* will be from 4-6 pm on Feb. 5 due to the Superbowl.

Imagination Ball

Thank you so much to everyone who came out to WUSYG'S Imagination Ball on Jan. 21st, which was an opportunity for our community to come together to celebrate love and diversity. #imaginethat The event included inspiring music from Shiva and Jakob Barton's Band UP (see John and Maggie Russell getting the dance floor started!), some fun facepainting and costumes (check out the Clark Family all decked out!) and some community-building crafts (including Love Notes to Neighbors and a Garden of Dreams planted with our collective Seeds of Hope.)

Guest at Your Table

WUS is participating in this year’s intergenerational Guest at Your Table program to raise support for and awareness about the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee’s mission and model for effecting social change. This year’s program is focused around the theme of Defying Hate. See the table in the Symmes Room to pick up a Guest at Your Table box and a copy of the inspiring “Stories of Hope” brochure, which highlights some of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee’s work to protect human rights in the face of hate, Islamophobia, and other forms of bigotry. If you have a Guest at Your Table box, please remember to “feed it”.

Coming This Sunday -

A Community Valentine

As February is a month of LOVE and we will be exploring the theme of "identity" as a congregation, Rev. Heather asked the Standing Committee Exec for permission to hang a "Love Your Neighbor" banner on the Mystic Valley Parkway side of the Society building. (See above.)

This message celebrates our values and aspirations of inclusion and serves as a reminder to everyone who sees it to "do unto others as we would have them do unto us." The banner will be introduced in worship on Sunday, will be hung that day and will remain for the rest of the month.

Message from UUSC : This week brought the first executive orders from the newly sworn in Trump administration. We are disappointed, to see that he is keeping campaign promises, including banning refugees from entering the United States, suspending visas of those from majority Muslim countries, punishing sanctuary cities by stripping their funding, and expanding the wall on the U.S.- Mexico border. UUSC President & CEO Tom Andrews stated, “We do not accept and we will actively resist this attempt to allow fear, xenophobia, and bigotry to destroy innocent lives and undermine the best of who we are as Americans.”

UUSC is calling on its members and supporters throughout the United States to “speak out and act up” in defense of moral principles being undermined by the Trump administration.

Introducing Qi Gong

Saturday, February 25th  9:30 – 12:30 PM - In the Meyer Chapel

Join intern Minister, Deborah Morgan Bennett for a morning exploring the ancient Taoist practice of Qi (pronounced chee) Gong.

Through gentle movements, postures and a focus on the breath discover how this simple practice can be a powerful way to free up stuck energy, gain vitality and experience a deep connection to the energy of the universe.

We will take a little time to dip into some of the philosophy behind the practice and learn a simple 20 minute flow to practice at home. No special equipment is needed. Wear comfortable clothing and come with a curious mind.

Racial Justice Team

Message from Black Lives Matter

Greetings folks,
Soon we will be upon the new year. With that new year, we will come across the month of February, which has been allotted to us to celebrate our history. We know, of course, that there is so much more to our history than one month to explain. This month will be different, because we have seen the course of our journey altered so much in the past year by white supremacy, racist police, and a country that has been reluctant to acknowledge our story, in which they consistently exist as an antagonist to our freedom. This February, we want to tell our own history, before it is corrupted, appropriated, misinterpreted, and forgotten. Black Lives Matter would like to take as many opportunities as we can to speak truth to power in the community and uplift those that have come before us, exist with us, and will come long after we are gone. We would like your help. Please send us any opportunities to speak at local community centers, schools, companies, churches, and any other forum available during Black History Month so that we can share our story, for us, by us. We know with the current environment, that there is no more important moment than now to speak on the struggles that compound our existence. Please send any info to: boston@blacklivesmatter.com.

Also, If you are interested in being a part of Black Lives Matter Boston, see:

The Grief Support Group

The Grief Support Group will meet Wednesday, February 22nd from 7:30-9:00 pm (to be held in the Winchester Unitarian Society Parlor / go in the 478 Main Street circular drive door and to your right.) All are warmly welcome to attend.

The Grief Support Group is open to anyone in the community who has experienced loss and seeks a caring environment to process the complex feelings of grieving. If you have experienced a death of someone in your life and would like to explore your grief with other people who have also experienced loss, please consider attending a grief support group meeting.  Everyone makes his or her own individual journey after experiencing loss. Our group has found that by sharing our journeys with each other, we are strengthened and comforted.

The grief support meetings start with a reading and then a check-in by participants. You can say as much or as little as you feel comfortable saying (you can also choose to pass if you want.) Usually personal check-ins last a few minutes each and should be uninterrupted. Then the conversation opens up. The facilitator usually starts off this conversation with a topic or question to discuss. The meetings conclude at 9pm. Our meetings are confidential- we ask that everyone observe the guideline that what is said in a meeting, stays in the meeting. Please see the attached covenant which the group abides.

Upcoming Schedule for the Grief Support Drop-In Group

Tuesday, March 21st    Parlor   7:30-9pm
Wednesday, April 26th    Parlor    7:30-9pm

Seeking Worship Associates

The Worship Associates are ready to expand their circle and welcome the next generation of partners in worship leadership. Ideal candidates are open to the experience of public speaking, have a natural appreciation for the art of worship and seek to serve the congregation-at-large. Overall, we aim to create a Worship Associate team that represents the age, gender, ethnic and theological diversity of the congregation. We especially welcome the presence and participation of youth!

There is also a behind-the-scenes job: researcher of worship elements, an ideal role for those who love poetry and reflective prose but who are not big fans of public speaking.

Those who are interested in learning more should contact Peter McEntee (peter.mcentee@comcast.net) or the Rev. Heather Janules (heather.janules@winchesteruu.org).

Celebrating Human Rights Every Day in Winchester.

Strengthening Winchester: A Civic Gathering

Are you committed to promoting inclusion, social justice and
civil rights in our community?

We know from local media that there was passionate support in Winchester for the Boston and Washington Women's Marches that stood to promote these values of human rights and tolerance. It's this passion leads many of us to ask: what can we do to ensure that what we value is protected and reflected in our town?

Please join us for a civic gathering hosted by the Winchester Multicultural Network, the Board of Selectmen, and the School Committee, where we will identify action steps we can take in our community, as a community.

Tonight, February 2, 2017
7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Jenks Center, Cummings Room
109 Skillings Road, Winchester

We are striving to include a diversity of voices and perspectives; please forward this email to friends and neighbors. This event is FREE. All are welcome.

Yoga

Monday Night Candlelight Yoga
6:30 – 8:00 pm in the Meyer Chapel

January – March
(No classes 2/20)

It is not too late to join us for our Winter Session of gentle Kripalu-style yoga with teacher Jamie Sokolowski (right)! Deep breathing (pranayama) brings warmth and focus. Yoga postures (asanas) gently stretch and strengthen, enhance balance and counter patterns of daily tension. Connecting breath and movement deepens self-awareness and enlivens our sense of being.  If you have never done yoga before, or only just a bit, Jamie gives clear guidance through a slow flow of postures, offering support as we go.  If you have more experience, you are invited to take the postures to your own depth of challenge. Ten-class ($150), 5-class ($75) and drop-in ($15) options available. Questions?  Email fritzie.nace@gmail.com.

Joys, Sorrows and Transitions

If you are facing a time of joy, sorrow or transition in your life, our ministers and the Pastoral Care Associates are available to offer a listening ear, compassionate presence and, if applicable, resources.

Healing wishes are with Margot Sudbury who underwent a hip replacement recently. She is recovering in the company of family in Somerville.

You may reach the Rev. Heather Janules or Intern Minister Deborah Morgan Bennett through the office at 781.729.0949. They can also connect you with a Pastoral Care Associate or the Caring Network (providing short-term, practical support like rides and meals.) To learn more about the PCAs, pick up a brochure when you are in the church.

Woburn Food Pantry

When you do your food shopping this week, please try to pick up a can or two of canned meat (chicken, spam, turkey, Vienna sausages, etc.) We will be collecting canned meats throughout the month of February. This is a particularly difficult time for the Pantry as donations of foodstuffs after the holidays drops off significantly but the need continues to grow. Please place your donations of canned meat in the bin located in the entrance of the church. Thank you!
