Volume 6 No. 14 | April 5, 2024 | |
Notes from the Editor:
Just this week someone asked me how there can still be so much to do when it's April, and season is supposed to be over!
Lest we forget, it wasn't always like this. A story I'm fond of telling, especially to newcomers, is about the day in 1997 when Jim Holmes, then-station manager at WQCS, asked me if I thought I could record a five-minute segment every weekday exclusively on the arts in the WQCS listening area. Of course I said Sure!
That was in August, when season was long over and schedules for the following season hadn't been published. As it turned out, there really wasn't anybody around the week before Labor Day, and the first Arts Spotlight was due to air the day after the holiday. I don't remember why that week's guests were available but I do remember a sinking feeling of desperation and then relief! I've kept a record of my guests from 1997 to 2012 so I can say thanks again to these first Arts Spotlight guests for being willing to get the show — and my local arts coverage — started.
Don Armstrong - renovations architect for the Lyric Theatre
Lucy Corley - history of the Lyric Theatre
Ginger Baldwin - the coming season at the Lyric Theatre
Emile Pandolfi, performing at the Henegar Center
This Arts Blast offers news of plenty of things to do but there are far more that we can't fit in. Make the Arts Blast calendar at willimiller.com a frequent stop.

Start your literary engines: NEA Big Read Miami
Through April 30
The National Endowment for the Arts’ Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a great book – and Miami Book Fair is again marking this unique literary happening with two months of events for readers young and old, centered around our title pick for 2024, MADELINE MILLER’s bestselling and critically acclaimed novel CIRCE.
In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child – not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power – the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves.
With vivid characters, mesmerizing language, and page-turning suspense, Circe is a triumph of storytelling. It’s an intoxicating tale of family rivalry, palace intrigue, and love and loss – and an empowering celebration of female strength in a man’s world.
