Word from the Pastor:
Place
When the day of Pentecost had come,
they were all together in one place.
—Acts 2:1
Last week was a whirlwind of events and headlines, and this week is the same. The CDC changed its masking and distancing guidelines for fully vaccinated folks, and we have followed its lead (be sure to check out some of those changes in this issue). The coming Sunday is Senior Sunday, and we are looking forward to hearing from our young people who are preparing to head out into the world. We’ll gather together outside for another One Worship service at 11:00, and we pray that the weather will cooperate this time.
This Sunday is also Pentecost Sunday, the birthday of the church. In our unique way, we will celebrate the gift of the Spirit filling the church and equipping us to bear fruitful witness to the Lordship of Christ. And as Acts 2:1 tells us, that day of Pentecost was one that found the disciples gathered together “in one place” as God opened up heaven to intersect with and indwell us and, through us, fill the earth with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the seas (Habakkuk 2:14).
I think that nowadays this concept of “in one place” as the starting point for all this wonder is difficult to grasp. On this side of COVID quarantines, distancing guidelines, and mask mandates, a lot has changed. The concept of place, or of gathering “in one place,” has taken on new shades of meaning that the disciples 2,000 years ago couldn’t even begin to fathom. While worshiping together in the church building makes sense as being “in one place,” does gathering digitally count as well? How about a Zoom prayer meeting? Would God have acted as he did if Peter, James, and John were gathered online to pray that fateful day?
Thankfully, we know that God is not restricted by time or place. While being gathered together “in one place” was true of the disciples on Pentecost, elsewhere in Acts it is clear that believers don’t have to be together physically for amazing things to happen. For example, Paul and Silas are in prison when the earthquake hits, and after that episode, they return to Lydia’s house to rejoin their brothers and sisters, who we can safely assume were praying for them despite the geographical separation (Acts 16). Peter is given a dream, opening the door for Gentiles to come into the church, and sending him on to Cornelius’s house despite the fact that they were in different cities (Acts 10).
In short, God is not confined by geography, and neither is our connection through the Spirit. We are one body, and we have one mission to glorify and serve the Lord. In the coming weeks and months, we will do this in a variety of places, and need not be confined to the FPC campus. Strangely, phones and the internet are powerful tools. Nothing keeps us from calling and encouraging our brothers and sisters. We can also serve in the myriad situations that arise every day, and we can serve humbly and in the name of Jesus.
The “one place” that matters above all is our place of belonging in Jesus Christ.
In Christ,
Pastor Sam

Join Us for One Worship on Senior Sunday
This Sunday, May 23, we will celebrate our high school seniors as they help lead One Worship outdoors at 11:00. Dan Kreiss will preach, and Ginny Osborne and Caden Myers will lead the music. Brandi McGill and Jessica Rogers will lead the time for children, and Jason Kreiss, Grayson Phipps, Emma Davis, and Christian Bolick will lead prayers and read scripture. Still others will usher and help behind the scenes.
The Class of 2021 is very grateful for the love and nurture given them throughout their time at First Presbyterian. Their best memories are of all the camps, retreats, and mission trips in which they grew in faith and relationship with their church family. They also are so thankful for the adults in the church who have listened to them and been both a safe place and a great source of godly wisdom.
Each senior will receive a box of letters written by friends and family along with a blanket bearing their name and Colossians 1:9–12./Katie Arnold

Our New COVID-19 Guidelines
In light of recent guideline changes by the CDC, the session has voted to adopt a number of changes to our COVID response policies. The biggest change, as you will see, is that fully vaccinated people (two weeks after the last shot in the series) no longer need to wear masks or practice distancing, although people are more than welcome to do so if they feel more comfortable that way. We also encourage unvaccinated or partially vaccinated individuals to continue wearing masks.
The leadership of our church encourages all of you to get your vaccine as soon as you can. By God’s grace, we will do our best to guard the health and wellbeing of our brothers and sisters in Christ. You can read more about our guideline changes here or on our website.

Our City Schools Need You
The teachers, administrators, students, and parents in the Bristol Tennessee City School system have drawn on grit, resolve, and imagination to educate our children and teens during the COVID-19 pandemic. You can help them in these ways:
Collections: BTCS is having weekly drawings through the end of the school year for staff appreciation. You can donate gifts, gift certificates, or coupons in any amount. All staff are included in each drawing, and BTCS will publicly recognize community sponsors on its website and on social media. Please drop off your donations at the central office building.
Mentors: Reading mentors will be hired for this summer and fall. BTCS will provide more information soon.
Substitute Teachers: We cannot overstate the impact you can make in the lives of our teachers and students through substitute teaching. We will continue to need teachers from now through fall.
Summer School Staff: BTCS needs summer school teachers and support staff. Teachers must be certified or enrolled in a teacher preparation program. Support staff, such as educational assistants, do not need those qualifications. Hours are flexible within the range of 8:00 to 5:30, Monday through Thursday, during June. If you are interested, email FPC Ruling Elder Dr. Annette Tudor, Director of BTCS. She will connect you with the summer school leadership team.

Young Organists Play Here May 31
We can hear an organ recital by two talented teens on Monday, May 31, at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. Performing will be Madeline Bishop, a 16-year-old sophomore at Virginia High School, and Jacob Moorman, a 17-year-old home-schooled junior. Each will play a short program, after which Dr. David Runner, Professor Emeritus at Milligan College, will talk briefly about the interesting art of organ registration. This program is open to all and free of charge. The sanctuary has distanced seating; the wearing of masks is mandatory. Please come and encourage these young people!
