In focus this week: Supporting men as they work toward housing
Paul Finnen, Zach Miller speak in worship
In July, we're featuring stories and invitations from people who are spending their summers serving others. 
  • Come to any worship service and hear from Paul Finnen and Zach Miller about serving men in our community as they search for permanent housing. Paul is a Covenant member who volunteers with Men's Shelter of Charlotte. Zach is an intern in our Stapleton/Davidson program.

  • This week, Suzanne Henderson teaches on Stories of God's People as Strangers in the New Testament

  • Aug. 12 - Rabbi Dusty Klass on Biblical Hospitality in the Hebrew Bible
  • Aug. 19 - Jessica Patchett on Biblical Hospitality in the New Testament
  • Aug. 26 - Rodney Sadler on Biblical Hospitality and its Call to Contemporary Churches

While you are shopping for school supplies, consider buying extra items for vulnerable children at our partner schools - Highland in Charlotte and Crossnore Elementary in Avery County. 
  • Red, blue or green notebooks and pocket folders, pencils, crayons/markers, hand sanitizer, tissues, Post-it notes
  • Blessing of the Backpacks is Aug. 26: Bring your school bags to worship and pray for God's blessings on a new school year.

Summer literacy program ends with potluck
Kim Robertson and the missions team would like to thank the faithful Covenant volunteers who served this summer. A lunch celebration is tomorrow at Highland, our CMS partner school. You can still volunteer!

Save the date: Author Wiley Cash visits Covenant
Convocation Sunday is Sept. 9
This year's speaker will help us to wrestle with our complicated social history around issues of labor, race, gender, the church and local politics. 

Wiley Cash, a New York Times bestselling author, will deliver the Twitty Lecture at 9:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall.  Wiley's latest book, The Last Ballad , chronicles the true story of a young mother struggling to provide for her family as a night-shift worker at the American Mill No. 2. Trying to make sense of middle school?
Sunday evening series kicks off Sept. 16
Middle school can be a challenging time - for young people and parents alike. If your child is already there or about to start, equip yourself for the road ahead.
  • Sept. 16: Michelle Icard, author of Middle School Makeover, will give a talk on "Making Sense of Middle School."  
  • Sept. 23: Moderated discussion of Middle School Makeover. 
  • Sept. 30: Panel discussion with Middle School Director Perrin Tribble; Susan Billmire, a guidance counselor at Alexander Graham Middle School; and Covenant high school students and parents. 
  • All sessions are 5:30 to 7 p.m. in Fellowship Hall 207. Details here.
