WINDSOR SENIOR RECREATION CENTER

Enriching Lives for Those Rich in Age

The Windsor Senior Recreation Center (WSRC) is a symbol of the Town’s Parks & Recreation Department’s steadfast dedication to enhancing the lives of its senior residents. The WSRC serves as a guiding light for the members of the community who are rich in age.

At the helm of WSRC's operations stand three formidable champions of the Town’s Parks and Recreation staff. Erin Stroud, the Recreation Program Supervisor, has steered the ship for the past eight years, attesting that this role remains the "best job she's ever had the pleasure of doing." Jenni Fleish, the spirited Recreation Coordinator, has devoted the last five years to creating an atmosphere of positivity for the center's members, expressing her love for working "with and for the senior community in Windsor." Meanwhile, Administrative Aide Leanne Khamvongsa joyfully declares, "The seniors make your day feel more exciting!"

The WSRC prides itself on offering a spectrum of services designed to keep its participants healthy, independent, and engaged.

  • As a Fitness Center, WSRC offers classes like Aerobics, Gentle Yoga, Strength Training, Sit and Be Fit, Zumba Gold, Tai Chi, Pilates, and a Therapeutic Pool that offers Water Fitness and personal water therapy opportunities that ensure the physical well-being of everyone involved. Also, a Recreation Center, the WSRC hosts lively activities such as Bingo, Ping Pong, Bocce Ball, day trips, special events, and a variety of arts and crafts classes to add a dash of fun to members' lives.
  • In its role as an Education Center, the WSRC becomes a hub of learning, offering classes on computer and smartphone help, free seminars, free tax aid, and AARP driving courses. Acting as a Resource Center, it offers essential resources like legal counseling, food assistance, internet support, and valuable information on housing and transportation.
  • Lastly, as a Wellness Center, the WSRC opens avenues for volunteer opportunities, offers support for elder abuse, and facilitates support groups, all working to enhance the overall well-being of our vibrant community.

To stay updated on the latest events and opportunities at WSRC, participants can visit www.townofwindsor.com/WSRCCALENDAR to find an overview of the center's offerings.

Don't miss out on the incredible opportunities awaiting you at the Windsor Senior Recreation Center or just come by and have a nice free cup of decaf coffee while reading a book from the library in the brand-new WSRC lobby.

Remember, age is just a number, and at WSRC, it's the number that unlocks a world of fun!

WINDSOR'S NEW VICE MAYOR

At last night’s Council meeting, Tanya Potter, Councilmember District 4, was unanimously voted in as Windsor’s Vice Mayor through December 2024. Vice Mayor Potter was elected to the Town Council in December 2022, is a long-time Windsor resident, and is committed to listening to the community and continuing to engage community members to participate in local decision-making.

WINDSOR'S HOLIDAY SPIRIT

The Charlie Brown Christmas Tree Grove is a magical time of year that takes a “village to make this spectacular event happen”. To volunteer please visit Charlie Brown Christmas Tree Grove: 2023 Charlie Brown Christmas Tree Grove Set-Up + Take-Down (signupgenius.com).

NEW TOWN OF WINDSOR LOGO

On November 1, Town staff presented to Town Council a “refreshed” and modernized logo staying true to the existing logo’s roots and history. The goal for the refresh was to keep the Town’s existing values of wisdom, family-friendliness, and sustainability while supporting color and depth by updating the font to express its vitality.

On December 6, Town Council approved the “refreshed” logo that complements and expands on the existing color palette with green being the primary color. It is anticipated that the new logo will appear on official documents after the first of the year and continue to transition to everyday use that includes envelopes, business cards, building and vehicle markers, and more throughout the year.

For more information on the Town Council presentation visit November 1, 2023 – Presentation on a Refresh of the Town of Windsor’s Logo.

LETTERS TO SANTA

Grab your paper, pencils, and crayons and tell Santa what you have been up to this year! Parents and helpers: Please include your child's name in the letter and a self-addressed and stamped return envelope to receive a reply from the North Pole.

We want to thank our elves at the Parks & Recreation Department for helping Santa get all the children’s letters again this year. Santa’s Mailbox will remain open through December with the deadline to "mail" your letter to the North Pole for a reply by Thursday, December 17.

ART UNDER THE OAKS

WINDSOR PHOTO CONTEST

The Parks and Recreation Department is excited to offer the Windsor Photo Contest again! Residents can submit their photos now through January 2, 2024, on the Town website at https://www.townofwindsor.com/1397/Art-Under-the-Oaks---Downtown-Photo-Gall.

There are eight categories to submit to: Arts, Culture, Food, Events, Learning/Education, Nature, Parks, and People. Selected photos will be produced and installed in an outdoor gallery in Windsor, similar to the current gallery near Bells Village.

We look forward to seeing your depictions of what makes Windsor a great place to live, work and play!

HALL PARK POLLINATOR GARDEN

The installation of a native plant pollinator garden is underway at Hall Park. The pollinator garden is located at the north end of the park in front of Diana Court. This garden will serve as an important habitat for local birds, bees, and butterflies alike. By cultivating a diverse habitat with native plants, we not only support pollinators which play a critical role in the health of our environment, but also promote water conservation and sustainable gardening.

The first round of planting has been completed with the final stage of planting to come in early spring. Please do not disturb the gardens as our wonderful plants are becoming established.

If you would like more information on the progress of the garden or are interested in learning about volunteer opportunities in the garden, please contact sparkhurst@townofwindsor.com.

Year Round - Composting

For more information visit Sonoma County Resource Recovery or Zero Waste Sonoma.

LEAVES, LEAVES, and MORE LEAVES

Tis the season for leaf blowing and raking! We all love a tidy front yard, but please don’t blow or rake your leaves into the street. Leaves can block storm drains, causing flooding when it rains. And while the street sweepers can pick up a moderate number of leaves, they aren’t designed to handle large leaf piles blown from your front yard.

Out of respect to your neighbors and your neighborhood street sweeper, please place leaves, twigs, and branches in your green compost bin.

For the best ways to handle leaves to protect Windsor’s creeks, visit https://www.streetstocreeks.org/residential/leaves/

WINDSOR READY!

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

The Town is partnering with Northern Sonoma County CERT to train Windsor residents and countywide community members to prepare for and respond to disasters.

The Basic CERT Training will take place

on January 27 and 28, at the Windsor Community Center located at 901

Adele Avenue. To participate you will need to complete 12 hours of online

courses and provide proof of completion.

To get the link to the online

courses or for more information visit https://www.nosococert.org/about/training-and-certification/ or email

gpeters@nosococert.org.

We welcome all members of the county to join us!

On December 2, Nuestra Comunidad (NC) educated Windsor community members in both English and Spanish on the importance of being ready for an emergency and the steps to get there.

Each participant received valuable information and a “go bag” that included MREs, water packs, a whistle, and a crank flashlight. We appreciate our community members for being Windsor Ready! One presentation at a time.

SUSTAINABILITY OUTREACH

Zero Waste Sonoma (ZWS) is taking a poll on suggestions for the 2024 Zero Waste Guide. ZWS has provided potential topics of consideration such as “lifestyle tips, historical reflections, hard to recycle material” or others. You can pick your topic or add your own by visiting Zero Waste Sonoma 2024 Zero Waste Guide Poll

Bay Area Regional Energy Network aka BayREN has an upcoming Regional Forum on December 7 from 9AM – Noon via Zoom. The forum will explore the hurdles related to residential electrification, including electrical panels and building permits, and ways to overcome them. In addition, options for electrifying existing panels and how building permits and zoning codes may be modified to remove barriers for heat pumps will also be included.

For more information and to register visit Residential Electrician in the Real World: Navigating Panels and Permits.

A MESSAGE FROM SONOMA COUNTY FIRE DISTRICT

Did you know that coal and ashes can remain hot enough to start a fire for many days after the fire is out?

On November 27th Sonoma County Fire District, responded to a 2-Alarm structure fire in the Town of Windsor, caused by improper disposal of ashes from a fireplace. Crews were able to extinguish the fire involving 2 homes within minutes of arriving on the scene due to excellent communication and an aggressive fire attack strategy.

As the weather gets colder, we respond to more fires related to the improper disposal of hot coals or ashes from fireplaces, wood stoves, pellet stoves, and grills.

To prevent these types of fires, your SCFD Emergency Responders and Fire Prevention Division recommend:

  • When possible, allow ashes and coals to cool in place completely before removing.
  • When it is time to dispose of the ashes, transfer them to a metal container and wet them down.
  • Keep the metal container outside and away from your home and fence.
  • Do not place any other combustibles in the metal container or near the metal container.

Wishing all in Windsor a safe Holiday Season from your local Emergency Responders at Sonoma County Fire District.
