The Windward School
Fall 2019 Alumni Newsletter
Hello Windward Alumni,

This year's Homecoming was spectacular, with generations of alumni from the Classes of 1987 through 2019 returning to Windward to reconnect with each other and former teachers. Many of you had a chance to meet Mr. Jamie Williamson, our new Head of School, at Homecoming, and you will have another chance to meet him at our next alumni event at Devon on November 19.

Our alumni program is continuing to grow, and we look forward to seeing more of our Windward alumni on campus and at events. If you would like to be involved in alumni events or host an event, please call or email me!

Thanks so much,
Michelle Spino Andruss

More than 100 alumni, alumni parents, faculty, staff, and friends attended 2019 Alumni Homecoming on October 19 at the Westchester Middle School campus. One of the highlights of the day was the Westchester vs. Manhattan boys and girls soccer matches. Roaring cheers from teammates and the crowd of spectators could be heard up and down Garry Field. Additionally, a college planning seminar for 10th and 11th graders provided useful information for the high school alumni and their parents.

If you would like to assist with planning future alumni events, please contact Michelle Spino-Andruss, Director of Alumni Relations, at  alumni@thewindwardschool.org .
Save the Date – Upcoming Events
For alumni ages 21+, join your fellow Windward alumni for an evening cocktail and networking social. The event will be hosted by alum Oliver Zabar '09 at his Lower East Side restaurant, Devon, which opened in November 2018. The craft cocktail bar and restaurant has a retro-modern feel, offering an eclectic menu of new twists on old favorites. The restaurant is named after his mother, Devon Fredericks, who is also a former Windward President of the Board of Trustees.

News on Windward/Haskins Laboratories Collaborative Project
In February 2019, The Windward School in collaboration with  Haskins Laboratories  announced the  Windward/Haskins Laboratories Collaborative Project  as part of The Haskins Global Literacy Hub, an international and interdisciplinary collaborative that brings together researchers, practitioners, educators and education technology specialists.

This partnership will establish state-of-the-art labs at The Windward School's Manhattan and Westchester campuses. In-school research using neurocognitive measures will be conducted by Haskins scientists and Windward teachers to better understand which instructional strategies work best for which students, a critical step in moving toward individuated brain-based instructional programs. Cognitive and brain imaging research will also be carried out to improve early diagnosis of language-based learning disabilities in at-risk preschool children. Finally, a joint Windward/Haskins training and professional development program will be created for educators, clinicians, researchers, and other stakeholders so that critical research-to-practice goals can be achieved.
