For the last 15 years, Custom Internet Services LLC has been helping small businesses by providing services in cybersecurity, networking, data protection, disaster recovery, and web management. As our names states, our services are custom, so this could include smaller projects such as setting up branded email or claiming an online business listing, or larger projects such as disaster recovery planning or removal of malware. Our staff is also available to offer training in the areas of cybersecurity, website design, and social media.

Since Owner, Steve Strom first opened the small IT firm in 2003, a lot has changed. In 2013 a Web Management section was started with the addition of Stacey Higdon. New services that have grown from this area include website design/management, social media services, and online directory management. The addition of a training center in 2016 (and the additional equipment that goes with it), prompted the hiring of Gavin Rose to the Technical Services team. Gavin is currently working towards a Bachelor's & Master's degree in Cybersecurity at Friends University.

2018 has brought the addition of two new team members-David Brodbeck and Raylee Rose. David holds a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Southwestern College and is the most recent member of our Technical Services team. Raylee joins the Web Management team and brings with her experience in WordPress and photography.

Custom Internet Services is a Microsoft Partner and an Infrascale Channel Partner. Additional products/services can be found on company-owned websites: CustomInternet.biz, WhiteHorseDomains.com, LockYourData.com.

Winfield Main Street

Businesses Get a Face Lift Through Paint the Town Event

Winfield Main Street recently held a "Paint the Town" event, in which ten downtown businesses were spruced up thanks to volunteers from the Rotary Youth Leadership Camp as well as local community members. Two of the bigger projects included scraping and repainting the Cowley CourierTraveler storefront and The Bar & Grill's garage door and wood paneling. Volunteers spent two days working on these projects and finished with clean, polished looking storefronts.

Other smaller projects included repainting door frames, panels, and the garage door on the Winfield Chamber, Hutto Printing, and Neives Mexican Restaurant. Also, a group of Rotary Campers cleaned awnings at Neives, Graves Drug, American Family Insurance, and Finney Heating & Air. The group also removed an old awning from Bair's Glass to make way for new metal sheeting. Masonic Lodge members repainted the frames around the stained glass windows on their storefront at 718 Main Street with the help of paint and equipment from the Winfield Main Street Committee.

Thanks to donations from Mumford Contracting, M.A.C. Services, Aaron's Sales & Lease, and The Rental Station in Arkansas City, the committee was able to complete all projects under budget and is planning to tackle more downtown projects before the year is over. Paint the Town will now be an annual event for community members to get together and help maintain the beauty of Winfield's downtown district.

Kansas Leadership Center to stop in Winfield during state tour
The Kansas Leadership Center (KLC), headquartered in Wichita, is embarking on a state tour next week and will stop in Winfield to host a free, one-hour event to meet with Kansans who want to be a part of creating a different kind of leadership culture in this state.
KLC is working to transform the civic culture of Kansas so that it's a culture that solves problems faster, more effectively and more efficiently. It does that by working with and through individuals and organizations across the state. And they offer a number of ways for Kansans to get involved - attend a program, send employees for training or apply for a Leadership Transformation Grant.

Work to Begin on Cowley County Community Health Needs Assessment
Over the next three months, William Newton Hospital will be partnering with the City-Cowley County Health Department and Community Health Center in Cowley County to update the Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA).
These organizations share a goal to understand progress in addressing community health needs cited in the 2015 CHNA and to collect up-to-date community health perceptions in Cowley County.
"Hospital leaders use the CHNA as a tool to respond to healthcare needs," says William Newton Hospital Chief Executive Officer, Ben Quinton. "The assessment not only informs hospital strategy, but is key to maintaining our tax-exempt status."
Affordable Care Act legislation requires all tax-exempt hospitals to submit a CHNA to the IRS every three years. As a Federally Qualified Health Center, the Community Health Center in Cowley County is also required to conduct a CHNA to fulfill funding requirements set forth by Health Resources and Services Administration.
To accomplish this work, a short online survey has been developed.
The CHNA feedback link can also be found on William Newton Hospital's, City-Cowley Health Department's and Community Health Center in Cowley County's website and/or Facebook pages.
"We hope that the community and health professionals will take advantage of this opportunity to provide input into the future of healthcare delivery in our county," comments City-Cowley County Health Department Administrator Tom Langer.
All community residents are encouraged to complete the CHNA online survey by Wednesday, August 1, 2018 and to attend the upcoming scheduled Town Hall on Tuesday August 21 from 11:30-1:00pm at Winfield Public Library.
Vince Vandehaar, MBA (VVV Consultants LLC, an independent research firm from Olathe, KS) has been retained to conduct this community wide research. If you have any questions about CHNA activities, please call 620-221-2300 extension 1113.

Helmer to Enter Kansas Sports Hall of Fame
Jim Helmer, who coached the Southwestern College cross country team to 84 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference championships during his 35-year career as head cross country coach, will be inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame. The announcement of the 2018 induction class, which includes University of Kansas legend Paul Pierce and former Kansas City Royals owner Ewing Kauffman, was announced last week by Kansas Sports Hall of Fame officials.

Helmer coached the Moundbuilder cross country and track and field programs to 84 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference championships in his 35-year career. Under his guidance, the Southwestern men's cross country team won 32 KCAC championships, including 31 straight championships from 1980-2011. He also coached Southwestern to 29 KCAC outdoor track and field championships, and a KCAC indoor track and field championship. Helmer was a 31-time KCAC men's cross country coach of the year, and was named the KCAC men's track and field coach of the year 32 times.

The induction will mark Helmer's third hall of fame induction. He was inducted into the Southwestern College Athletics Hall of Fame in 1991, and was inducted into the NAIA Cross Country Hall of Fame in 2001.
The annual induction ceremony will take place on Sunday, Oct. 7, in Wichita. For more information, visit www.kshof.org.

Shannon Vargas New CFO at Southwestern College
Southwestern College President Brad Andrews has announced Shannon Vargas as the college's new vice president for finance and chief financial officer. Vargas, a Southwestern College graduate, began her career locally. She worked for the City of Winfield and at an accounting firm in Arkansas City.  She has spent the past 13 years at GE Aviation in positions of increasing responsibility including senior finance leader.

At GE, Vargas had significant success aggressively managing financial strategies and goals as a senior leader at the Strother Field and Winfield plants. In this role, she worked with over 1,000 employees, and annual sales of over $1 billion from this site.

"Shannon has not only demonstrated an ability to manage budgets, but also an ability to play a key role in driving a complex organization towards increased profitability," Andrews says.  "She brings experience from industry that will be particularly valuable as we work to set and meet financial targets and goals in a manner that optimizes our ability to be successful in our mission as a college. Her years working in an organization that faces significant financial, regulatory, and operational challenges, as well as her proven management experience, will be of great benefit. We are excited for the new dimension of leadership experience Shannon brings to the college."
