SC Class Seeking Businesses for TV Commercial Production

The COMM 114 Basic Video Production course at Southwestern College is seeking to collaborate with local Winfield businesses this Spring 2018 semester in the production of free 30-second television commercials.  Students will be required to communicate clearly with business owners/managers as clients and incorporate their ideas and visions into these ads using high definition video and sound to deliver the finished product by an agreed-upon deadline.  Clients will receive a copy of the finished ad on a DVD or jump drive.  Commercials will also air on Southwestern College's new JinxTV television station. For more information, please contact instructor Jason Knowles at

In November 2015, RISE Cowley (formerly the Cowley County Healthy Communities Coalition) approved a bike rack design contest for 5 communities in Cowley County.  Inspired by the Ohio Creating Healthy Communities project, RISE Cowley strives to promote healthy choices by focusing on policies, systems and environments. Specifically, this project helps create infrastructure to support and increase biking.
A contest for youth to submit designs was held in January 2016 and winning designs were selected for Arkansas City and Winfield. A fish bike rack was installed last fall at the Winfield Public Library and a sunflower bike rack with bench will be constructed this spring for installation in Arkansas City.
The design contest is being re-issued for the communities of Burden, Dexter and Udall. The design contest invites youth, ages 5-18, and their families to create a design specific to their community. If the design is selected, RISE Cowley will pay to have it built and installed in the community.
Bike rack designs do not have to be fancy drawings - in fact simple lines are easiest to fabricate into a functional bike rack. It is suggested that the design be 6-8 feet long and suitable to secure at least 4-6 bikes. Youth can submit more than one design and they are due by March 2, 2018 to the Cowley County Extension Office, PO Box 538 Winfield or via e-mail to
If you are an adult with an idea for a design, find a youth in your community and partner on a submission. Funding for the fabrication and installation is from the Communities Preventing Childhood Obesity grant project previously received by RISE Cowley.
For more information, please contact Becky Reid at K-State Research and Extension Cowley County at 620.221.5450.

The Military Hometown Heroes of Winfield Banner Project is a living tribute created for the community to recognize and honor Winfield residents and their family members who are serving, have served, or have given their life to our country in the United States Armed Forces. Each banner will be in honor of a specific Winfield service person and will include their name, branch of service and photo. Banners will be displayed in the square of the Winfield Memorial Park on Armed Forces Day and the month of November to both celebrate and remind the community of their dedication to our country.

The Hometown Heroes banners will be displayed at the Memorial Park square at the initial start of this program and as the project expands the banners will be placed in other common community areas within our town, such as 9th and Main street. (All banner locations shall be determined solely by the banner committee.)
The Hometown Heroes Banners are purchased by the family members or the individual veteran. The cost of each banner is $150 and includes the design, production and shipping. $160 is for the pole hardware that includes, 2 poles, 2 clamps and 2 steel straps. $7.00 will be added for the administration fee. Totaling $317.  Only one Veteran per banner side. So if you have multiple Veterans you may put one Veteran on one side and the other on the other side.
The banners will be used twice a year for the next four years. At the end of the 4th year the family will be notified that their term is up and they will have the option of purchasing a new banner and continue with another 4 years or opt out and keep their banner.  When they opt out we will mail their banner back to them for the family to do what they wish.
Businesses or individuals at any time may donate any amount of monies to help other Veterans that are unable to purchase their own banner.  They may also sponsor an individual Veteran.
