FCA Students Taking Flight for Christ
May/June 2020

Another school year has passed into the books. Who would have thought that our world would be shifted upside down and that a relatively unknown virus, Covid-19, would test our resolve, enterprise, and possibly even our faith? With thanks, first and foremost to God, our staff, our students, and you, as parents, we rose up with strength, creativity, and prayer to meet this grave and daunting challenge successfully. My admiration and appreciation to one and all...and to God, we give the glory.

The danger of the disease is far from over. As a nation and as a world, it appears that progress to curb the spread of this disease is becoming a welcome reality. As Headmaster, along with our very talented and dedicated staff, we are preparing for the next school year not knowing for certain the factors that may be dictated to us from local, state, and federal authorities. Nonetheless, the quality of our educational model and the safety of our students and our staff remains paramount. Presently, we are creating strategies and plans to ensure that our expectations for your child will not only be achieved but will be exceeded. My heartfelt thanks to our parents, grandparents, and many friends of FCA for their continued prayers and support.

These past few months at the Academy, though significantly modified by the Coronavirus, were blessed with meaningful events and activities. Our quick response to implementing Remote Learning has to be recognized for using technology effectively to connect students to an online classroom. Along with delivering each student with his or her academic lessons, our staff ensured that students received support in their Christian training. Each youngster also had an online mentor-counselor to help ease the unrest and anxiety brought on by the virus. Our goal, as educators and administrators, is to continue to teach the whole child.

In addition, the civil unrest that our country is experiencing is heartbreaking. As we look to move forward in a positive, Godly way, it is important to remind ourselves of the Biblical principles by which we are called to live. One of my favorite accounts in the Bible is found in Revelation. John was given this vision of heaven: "After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands". ~ Revelation 7:9

During this extraordinary time in all of our lives, the Academy received its Cognia accreditation from the Florida Association of Christian Schools. The Cognia is the highest accreditation that a school can receive from FLOCS. I am very proud of our faculty for the labor of love in teaching that takes place, regardless of Covid-19, each school day. The Cognia validates that FCA has gone beyond the benchmarks associated with topnotch Christian schools. As Headmaster, speaking for our staff, I assure you that we will honor this achievement with our words and practices in the classrooms and more so to honor God.
Kindergarten Graduation
This past school year we experienced our first-ever “drive-by” graduation for our precious VPK and kindergarten students. It was fun, exciting, and creative. Congratulations to these children and to their parents, grandparents, and teachers! These children will be entering either kindergarten or first grade in August with the motivation and skills to take on their new lessons. Let’s remember to keep these little ones in our prayers.
FCA Is Growing

FCA is a work in progress just as we are as Christians. God is always growing each one of us and He is faithfully growing our school. Work is underway to accommodate our upcoming 12th-grade students. I am a bit awestruck to even say the words Grade 12. These young men and women will be our first graduating class.
Along with the labor to create classroom space conducive to learning, we are making physical renovations for new staff. One, in particular, that has come on board is Mrs. Suzanne Vacirca as our Development Director. Mrs. Vacirca will be sending out a letter of introduction to each one of you in the near future. One of our very important goals for the new school year and moving forward is to establish a sustainable giving program.
Throughout the last few months of school, I communicated with FCA families on a regular basis. I wanted you to feel confident that steps were in the daily process to maintain a strong connection between your child, at home, and his or her teachers. One form of communication was the three surveys that most of you completed evaluating our Remote Learning Plan. I am pleased to say that your responses were for the most part beyond the affirmative. We learned from your responses what was working successfully and those one or two areas that needed improvement. Thank you for your faithful partnership with us for the education of each child.

Our FCA governing board is changing as you might expect with any growing institution. It is with prayerful gratitude that we say “farewell” to Mr. Art Shuster who served on the board for seven years. For the last two years, Art served as board president. He will be missed but we are grateful to him for the role he played in advancing God’s vision and our mission at the Academy. He will be replaced by Mr. John Van Tomme as our new board president. John is president of the Governing Committee at Living Waters World Outreach and has a granddaughter at the Academy who will be in ninth grade.

In closing, I am honored and blessed to serve as headmaster. It seems that in this newsletter, I have used the word “serve” a lot. This word is appropriate especially during this unsettling time and is more than a word. “Serve or Serving” is a practice and it is something that as Christian educators and administrators we do each and every day. Our lives are devoted to raising up student-disciples who will lead and achieve.

I am looking forward to writing our July edition of “Wings” and providing you with a timely update on our summer projects. On behalf of our school educators and our board of directors, kindly accept my best wishes for a Happy Independence Day. Please be safe and healthy with the knowledge that our prayers are covering our families and friends during this extraordinary time in our lives. “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.“ ~John 14:27

And to all Our Wonderful Dads, Happy Father’s Day!

In Faith and Friendship,

Congratulations to our End-of-Year Award Recipients! Students from each grade level were honored with the Perseverance , Christian Character , and Eagle Awards.

  • The Perseverance Award is presented to students who have overcome obstacles on the road to improvement.
  • The Christian Character Award is presented to those students selected by their peers as someone who has most exemplified Jesus Christ.
  • The Eagle Award is presented to those students who demonstrate christian character, academic excellence, leadership skills, and good citizenship.

Typically, the awards are presented at our last chapel service. This year, Mr. Alvare' had the pleasure to personally deliver many of the awards to our students at their homes. Some families elected to bring their student to the Upper School where they were "surprised" with their award. We were able to get photos of a few of our students getting their awards and will share them with you soon!
