Gunky the Rock Snake Returns!

Spring is here, and we welcome the return of all of the beautiful colors as the Spring buds bloom. We'd also welcome folks to celebrate the Spring thaw and blossoms by adding a bit of color to Gunky the Rock Snake. Gunky is a collaborative art project sponsored by Vision of Wallkill and the Community Rocks Project and is intended to spread joy, kindness and a sense of community through creativity.

So, paint some rocks and add them to Gunky the snake to make him grow.

Steps:

  1. Find rocks and soak/wash the dirt off. Landscape or river rocks work best.
  2. Use acrylic paints, paint brushes and Mod Podge (available at any arts and crafts store).
  3. Coat the rocks with a light color of acrylic paint and let them dry or use rocks as is.
  4. Paint a picture (anything you want) or write inspirational sayings on the rocks with acrylic paint or acrylic paint pens and let dry.
  5. Seal the rocks with Mod Podge or other acrylic paint sealant (Mod Podge comes in “brush on” jars or spray).
  6. Write "Wallkill Rocks/Post to Facebook" on the back of the rocks.
  7. Place your rocks at the Wallkill Public Library where you will find Gunky the snake along the hedge in the front.

Join Vision of Wallkill and Wallkill Rocks Facebook pages.

Post a picture of your rock so everyone can see Gunky grow.

Book Clubs

Adult Fiction Book Club

The Adult Fiction Book Club will be meeting on Tuesday, May 19 at 3:45 PM to discuss James by Percival Everett.

A brilliant reimagining of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn—both harrowing and satirical—told from the enslaved Jim's point of view

When Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he runs away until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck has faked his own death to escape his violent father. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Brimming with nuanced humor and lacerating observations that have made Everett a literary icon, this brilliant and tender novel radically illuminates Jim's agency, intelligence, and compassion as never before. James is destined to be a major publishing event and a cornerstone of twenty-first-century American literature.

April's Adult Book Club Selection

We'll be discussing The Boxcar Librarian by Brianna Labuskes on Tuesday, June 16 at 3:45 PM.

Inspired by true events, a thrilling Depression-era novel from the author of The Librarian of Burned Books about a woman’s quest to uncover a mystery surrounding a local librarian and the Boxcar Library—a converted mining train that brought books to isolated rural towns in Montana.

Inspired by the fascinating, true history of Missoula’s Boxcar Library, the novel blends the story of the strong, courageous women who survived and thrived in the rough and rowdy West with that of the power of standing together to fight for workers’ lives. And through it all shines the capacity of books to provide connection and light to those who need it most. -- from Goodreads.

Saturday Morning Book Club

book cover-The Women by Kristin Hannah

The Saturday Morning Book Club will hold their next meeting on Saturday, May 23 at 10:30 AM. They'll be discussing The Women by Kristin Hannah.

An intimate portrait of coming of age in a dangerous time and an epic tale of a nation divided.

The Women is the story of one woman gone to war, but it shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm’s way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten. A novel about deep friendships and bold patriotism, The Women is a richly drawn story with a memorable heroine whose idealism and courage under fire will come to define an era.

Reading ahead?

June's Saturday Book Club Selection is...

... The Year of Pleasures by Elizabeth Berg. We'll be discussing it on Saturday, June 27 at 10:30 AM.

In this rich and deeply satisfying novel by the beloved author of The Art of Mending, and Open House, a resilient woman embarks upon an unforgettable journey of adventure, self-discovery, and renewal.

Betta Nolan moves to a small town after the death of her husband to try to begin anew. Pursuing a dream of a different kind of life, she is determined to find pleasure in her simple daily routines. Among those who help her in both expected and unexpected ways are the ten-year-old boy next door, three wild women friends from her college days, a twenty-year-old who is struggling to find his place in the world, and a handsome man who is ready for love.

Elizabeth Berg's The Year of Pleasures is about acknowledging the solace found in ordinary things: a warm bath, good food, the beauty of nature, music, friends, and art. "Berg writes with humor and a big heart about resilience, loneliness, love, and hope. And the transcendence that redeems," said Andre Dubus about Durable Goods. And the same could be said about The Year of Pleasures.

The Gauguin Connection
The first book in the Genevieve Lenard series by Estelle Ryan

Murdered artists. Masterful forgeries. Art crime at its worst.

A straightforward murder investigation quickly turns into a quagmire of stolen Eurocorps weapons, a money-laundering charity, forged art and high-ranking EU officials abusing their power.

As an insurance investigator and world renowned expert in nonverbal communication, Dr Genevieve Lenard faces the daily challenge of living a successful, independent life. Particularly because she has to deal with her high functioning Autism. Nothing - not her studies, her high IQ or her astounding analytical skills - prepared her for the changes about to take place in her life.

It started as a favour to help her boss' acerbic friend look into the murder of a young artist, but soon it proves to be far more complex. Forced out of her predictable routines, safe environment and limited social interaction, Genevieve is thrown into exploring the meaning of friendship, expanding her social definitions, and for the first time in her life be part of a team in a race to stop more artists from being murdered.

And if you enjoy this title, we’ve got ten more that follow Genevieve Lenard’s further investigations!
