Saturday, October 20

The Arc Dane County is excited to announce that we have a Wings for All® event scheduled at the Dane County Regional Airport on Saturday, October 20. The Wings for All®/Wings for Autism® program involves a partnership among The Arc (national office), a local chapter of The Arc, an airport and an airline. Many airports around the country now hold Wings events.  Here, the partnership is among the Dane County Regional Airport, TSA, Delta Air Lines, the national office of The Arc, and three chapters of The Arc Wisconsin:  The Arc Dane County, The Arc Green County and The Arc Richland County.

Wings for All® is an airport rehearsal program for individuals with an intellectual or developmental disability (I/DD) who have either never flown before or who have had difficulties with a flight experience.  If flying has been a challenge for your family member with I/DD or anyone else you know, you or other families should make sure to sign up for membership in The Arc Dane County, with paid 2018-19 membership fee received at the office of The Arc no later than noon on August 24, in order to have the best chance of being able to participate.

This event is free for all participants; however online registration is required and done on a first-signed up, first-served basis until full. We know there will be more demand for this event than the plane can accommodate.

Members of The Arc Dane County will have a priority sign-up period the week before Labor Day, before registration is opened to the general public after Labor Day.  Shortly before August 27, current members of The Arc Dane County will receive an email or other notification with the link to access the priority on-line registration. Participants with I/DD are allowed to have one family member or other companion accompany them to the event where they will thoroughly rehearse all aspects of a real flight experience including: check-in, TSA security, waiting at the gate, and boarding the plane (which will stay on the ground). After de-boarding, families will complete an event survey, receive a gift bag, and enjoy a short reception.

Airport personnel, TSA agents and Delta Air Lines personnel are all volunteering their time (and also the Delta Air Lines plane!) for this event, and we have many excited people - the volunteers, the planning committee, and members of The Arc Dane County.  Even if you don't think your family member would need this experience, you may know other families who have someone with an intellectual or developmental disability who might benefit from this free rehearsal experience and who should be sure their membership in The Arc Dane County is current.

You've gone through the worksheets and possibly contacted a legal professional.  But, have you decided who fills each of the roles on your future planning team?

Ask the person with I/DD who he or she would like to invite as part of the team, which can include the person with I/DD, parents, siblings, other family members, friends, legal and financial professionals, and other important people in the person's life. Some of these people may live out-of-state but should be included if they play a large role in the person's life. This team works together to identify and take steps to create the supports the person will need.
