2021 HCC Business Plan Competition
Announces Winners!

Congratulations to our Winners

The 2021 HCC Business Plan Competition celebrated a 92 percent graduation rate on Thursday, June 10, after four months of training and advising, with twenty-four teams completing the competition. Seed money was awarded to the top five teams.

  • 1st Place - $12,000 - McVicker Hospitality Group: John Wesley McVicker Jr. & Desiree Worrell; Advisors - Chuck Weiser & Jim Nordhaus - McVicker Hospitality Group is a Houston-based restaurant group focusing on providing quality vegan food and beverage products. It was consciously constructed to offer quality food choices with health in mind. We operate as a ghost kitchen model, only offering pick-up and delivery. We are working relentlessly to change the narrative about maintaining a happy, healthy lifestyle. Our vegan food and beverage restaurant concepts are in alignment with the nationwide health trends and demand for convenient quality foods as individuals seek to build and maintain healthy lifestyles.  Opened in January 2021, this startup business team sought the competition training and food & beverage advising to create a focused actionable plan to launch and implement three concepts Clean Vegg Kitchen, Vegg Tacos and Vegan to Pieces; with a fourth concept called Jack It Up coming soon.  Based in the Galleria area, McVicker Hospitality Group Concepts offer meals for curbside pickup or for delivery through Uber Eats, Door Dash and other similar platforms. The team will allocate half of their winnings towards marketing efforts and the remaining to payroll, operating reserve and inventory.
  • 2nd Place - $8,000 - Big Oak Tree Media: Juan Alanis; Team Members: Sandra Fernandez & Anjelica Cazares; Advisors: Leeanne Aguilar & Ahsen Khan - Big Oak Tree Media is a full-service integrated communications firm specializing in creative storytelling and multicultural marketing.  Through the competition training and advising, our  team is implementing our plan to launch a new Content Creation Division that produces original content for clients such as podcasts, live-streams, and other videos.  We will use our prize money to purchase additional equipment, expand our network of qualified audio/video editors, and invest in the lease of our new studio space in Houston's East End.
  • 3rd Place - $4,000 - Scrubs To The Rescue, LLC: Tennille Johnson, Team Member: Keosha Austin; Advisors: Wande Adedeji & Sheila Patterson -
Scrubs To The Rescue is on track to be the premier provider for Uniform Program services locally in the Houston area and nationally. We plan to shift the paradigm in the medical uniform industry one healthcare professional at a time. The competition helped us create a plan to grow from a traditional brick and mortar and online retailer.  Think of us like the "Door Dash" of Medical Uniforms, where we bring the product directly to individual customers and healthcare providers at the right time, offering a convenient customized experience through our innovative Uniform Program and Scrub Subscription Plan. Our prize money will be used for inventory and marketing.
  • Honorable Mention - $1,000 - True Vision Aerial Solutions: Yolanda Watson; Team Members: Therion Watson & Marcus Bulls; Advisors: Jim Field & Kimberly Penn - True Vision Aerial Solutions will be a Drone Service Provider (DSP) using both traditional photography and drones to capture aerial photographs and videos for listing agents seeking to increase their competitive edge in residential and commercial property sales.  The competition training and advising regarding the drone industry and financial management allowed this team to create an actionable plan with a scheduled opening date in Fall 2021.  Prize money will be used for training, website development and marketing.
  • Honorable Mention - $1,000 - Hair of Nature: Danyelle Templeton; Advisors: April Jones & Austin Tenette  - At Hair of Nature we offer quality hair care products that rejuvenate hair growth, hydrate, and strengthen the unique needs of women of color. Our mission is to provide an innovative, no-fuss hair care system that addresses our customers' hair needs with follicle stimulation, restoring hair loss using natural and skin safe ingredients for adults and children.  The competition helped me create a written plan, further define and target my B2C and B2B customers, practice my pitching skills and make connections regarding production. The prize money will go towards inventory and marketing.
