Main Street Revitalization

Construction Update

May 15, 2026

Traffic and Parking Impacts:

Main Street between Spring Street and Tigan Street:

Next week, motorists can expect parking restrictions, lane reductions, and traffic shifts on Main Street between Spring Street and Tigan Street. Two-way traffic will be maintained, with the potential for alternating one-way traffic. Flaggers will be stationed at multiple locations to direct traffic at side street intersections. “No Parking” signs will be posted where on-street parking is restricted.

From Monday, May 18, through Wednesday, May 20, traffic on Main Street near the Winooski Fire Department (Maple Street/Union Street area) will experience temporary traffic stoppages of up to 10 minutes between 7 AM and 7 PM while crews install traffic signal mast arm poles.

On Thursday, May 21, and Friday, May 22, similar temporary holds of up to 10 minutes (7 AM to 7 PM) will occur at the Main Street and Spring Street intersection for traffic signal mast arm pole installation. Lane reductions and traffic shifts will also be in effect on East and West Spring Street, with two-way traffic maintained.

The Main Street southbound approach to the Tigan Street intersection has been reduced from two lanes to one lane to improve driver safety. This lane reduction will remain in place 24/7 until final striping and pavement markings are installed later this construction season.

Pedestrians should follow all posted sidewalk closure signs and detour routes as sidewalk excavation and installation take place on Main Street between Lafountain Street and Tigan Street throughout the week, and on Normand Street on Thursday and Friday. Pedestrian access will be maintained along Main Street and to the Winooski School District.

Adjacent Project Impact: Weaver Street Utility Work

From May 21–22 and May 28–29, on-street parking will be temporarily restricted on the west side of Weaver Street near 168 Weaver Street, just south of the West Spring Street intersection, to accommodate independent utility work. The restricted area will be clearly marked with cones and signage.

Property Impacts:

Monday and Tuesday, driveway access interruptions of up to 48 hours are expected along the east side of Main Street just north of Lafountain Street (weather permitting) as crews complete sidewalk excavation and installation.

On Wednesday, sidewalk work will shift to the west side of Main Street, beginning near Bellevue Street and progressing north. Driveway impacts are not anticipated for this work next week. In the following weeks, crews will install driveway aprons along this segment, which will require temporary driveway closures. These closures are expected to last 2–3 days, depending on whether the apron is asphalt or concrete. Additional notice will be provided in advance to help property owners plan accordingly.

The contractor will notify impacted property owners, residents, and/or businesses ahead of time by knocking on doors and leaving notices. The notices have QR codes that link to videos with information in 14 additional languages.

Crews will complete sidewalk excavation and installation on the east side of Main Street near 259 Main Street (just north of Lafountain Street) on Monday and Tuesday, before shifting to the west side on Wednesday, starting near Bellevue Street and progressing north. On Thursday and Friday, crews will excavate sidewalk on Normand Street.

Permeable paver installation will continue on the east side of Main Street, from just north of Lafountain Street to Tigan Street from Monday through Wednesday. On Tuesday and Wednesday, crews will prepare for paver installation on the west side between Bellevue Street and Tigan Street, before beginning installation on Thursday.

Near the Winooski Fire Department, crews will install traffic signal mast arms and wiring throughout the week. At the Main Street and Spring Street intersection, crews will install traffic signal mast arms and wiring on Thursday and Friday.

Please note, the schedule is subject to change due to weather and other variables.
