Council for Exceptional Children 2015 Outstanding Undergraduate Student

 

Mark Bergen, a Kean University senior with a double major in English and Special Education, is the 2015 recipient of the Outstanding Undergraduate Student Member of the Year Award presented by the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC).  The award is given to one undergraduate student internationally who has made outstanding contributions to CEC and to exceptional children. CEC is the largest international professional organization dedicated to improving the educational success of individuals with disabilities.

How Children Learn to Read

Why is it easy for some people to learn to read, and difficult for others? It's a tough question with a long history. We know that it's not just about raw intelligence, nor is it wholly about repetition and dogged persistence. We also know that there are some conditions that, effort aside, can hold a child back.Socioeconomic status, for instance, has been reliably linked to reading achievement. And, regardless of background, children with lower general verbal ability and those who have difficulty with phonetic processing seem to struggle. But what underlies those differences? How do we learn to translate abstract symbols into meaningful sounds in the first place, and why are some children better at it than others?

Profectum Online Course: "Connect Experience Write: Evidence-based practice. Using music and movement to teach handwriting."

 

In this short course you will learn the research base supporting the use of music and movement in teaching handwriting.  We will share research findings demonstrating efficacy in the use of the Connect Experience Write handwriting program in mainstream and special needs settings.  You will walk away with practical clinical strategies that can be implemented in your treatment and lesson plans (even without the use of the program).  You will learn how to implement the Connect Experience Write program in your setting.  You will also receive a 10% discount on the purchase of Connect Experience Write upon completion of this course.  

This course will take place in a virtual room supported by Webex, courtesy of Profectum (www.Profectum.org).  You will receive a link to the "classroom" upon registering.  You will also receive information regarding how to set up and use Webex.  The course instructors will be available prior to the course to assist you if needed.  Once we all enter the "classroom" via the Webex link we will be able to see one another and communicate as if we were in the same place.  This allows you to receive this information and engage in question and answer sessions live from the comfort of your home!
