STEM Week Participants Celebrated at December Partnerships Event
A standing room only crowd recognized the more than 70 STEM Week events hosted throughout Southeastern Massachusetts during the Partnerships Advancing STEM Education event at Bridgewater State University on December 5. Lt. Governor Karyn Polito distributed citations recognizing event hosts from schools, colleges & universities, businesses, and community organizations. A panel, facilitated by STEM Pipeline Manager Keith Connors, shared the impact of STEM Week events and the value of business/education partnerships in preparing students for success in the workplace. Exhibitors displayed various STEM projects and programs and attendees connected with potential partners, acquired new resources, shared ideas and strategies, and discussed ideas for STEM Week 2019.
Opportunities for Students & Classrooms
Design a DNA Experiment for Space 
Students in grades 7-12 are invited to design DNA experiments for space. Students will pioneer DNA research on the International Space Station to address real-life challenges of deep space exploration. Five finalist teams will receive mentoring from Harvard and MIT scientists and present at the 2019 International Space Station R&D Conference for a chance at the national award. The national winner will participate in Space Biology Camp and send their DNA experiment to space! Contest submission deadline is April 19, 2019. Jr. Tech Announces STEAM Programs
Jr. Tech continues its 2018-2019 school year STEAM Workshops for students in grades 4-12. These programs are held on Saturdays and during April vacation week at the Osterville Village Library. The March program topic is Living in a Virtual World (March 2).  Vacation week programming, April 15-19, features Intro to CAD, Autodesk Fusion 360 3D Modeling and 3D Printing. Register Today - Girls Statewide STEM Summit is March 31, 2019
Registration is open for the Girls STEM Summit - Statewide 2019, hosted by Jr. Tech. This one-day summit is for girls in grades 8 - 12 who love science, technology, engineering and math. The key goals of the event are to educate participants about various STEM career paths through hands-on breakouts, to encourage further STEM study in preparation for college, to inspire through interaction with female STEM professionals, to demonstrate the possibilities of a STEM career, and to close the gender gap in the STEM workforce. K-12 Marine Art Contest Seeks Entries
Revealing the Biodiversity of Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary is the theme of the 2019 K-12 Marine Art Contest. Entries will be judged in five categories - High School (9-12), Middle School (4-8), Elementary School (K-4), Scientific Illustration (all grades), and Computer Graphics/Photography (all grades). The submission deadline is April 26, 2019. Winning entries will be posted on the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary website as well as used by the sanctuary and the Massachusetts Marine Educators in their outreach programs. Easton Scientist-Teacher Partnership Program is March 23, 9-1, at Stonehill
Science from Scientists' Scientist-Teacher Partnership Program is designed to help elementary and middle school teachers feel more comfortable preparing and leading hands-on science activities by providing guidance, resources, and time to incorporate field-tested lessons into existing curricula. In the March 23 workshop, participants will learn how to use the 5E Model of Teaching, how to teach a Science from Scientists lesson, and will be given time to reflect on how these tools can be integrated into the classroom. Eastern MA Girl Scouts Seek Exhibitors 
Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts is hosting its 7th Annual STEM Conference & Expo on March 24 from 3-5 p.m. at Framingham State University. The organization seeks STEM partners to provide hands-on activities or demonstrations for the Expo. The goal of the Expo is to provide girls with the opportunity to make connections to college and careers and engage with STEM networks while having fun. Bio Teach Offering FREE PD for Teachers March 23 at MIT
Mass BioEd's Bio Teach program offers teachers professional development programs bringing together resources from universities, biotech companies, and veteran educators to provide teachers with the skills and knowledge to implement innovative life science labs and develop cutting-edge life sciences curricula. Bio Teach workshops qualify for PDPs and, in some cases, graduate credit. Register today for "Exploring Personal Genetics with PCR," Saturday, March 23, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at MIT. Participants will isolate thier own DNA and use PDR to amplify  the gene responsible for the ability to taste phenylthiocarbamide (PTC). They will then determine their genotype through restriction enzyme analysis and electrophoresis.  Participants will also explore personal genetics through a complementary lab that simulates the identification of individuals' genotypes for the D1S80 VNTR (variable number tandem repeats) locus. Wade Institute Seminar Series Updates
The Wade Institute for Science Education, formerly MITS, has three remaining sessions in its spring 2019 Professional Development Series. Upcoming sessions include: Biodiversity is Everywhere: Exploring the Ecology of Our Cities and Towns (February 28); New England & the Origins of American Environmentalism (March 21); and Minds on Brains: Making the Connection (April 25). Programs are held from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the Higgins University Center at Clark University in Worcester. Click here for additional information and to register.
Call for Presenters - Mass. Marine Educators Annual Meeting/Conference 
Educators,  scientists, graduate students, post-docs, marine industry experts and others working in the field of marine science are invited to share their knowledge and expertise at the 43rd Annual MME Meeting & Conference, Saturday, May 4, in Woods Hole . The conference includes keynote presentations, afternoon workshops, and time to network with fellow educators. The theme for the 2019 conference is Life in the Extreme.

Sessions are 75 minutes long. Interactive presentations including hands-on activities, discussion, or data exploration are encouraged. Attendees are often interested in materials that they can bring back to their classroom or other educational setting. Click here to submit a workshop proposal.
Bio/CS Teacher Integrator Opportunity
Are you a  biology teacher wanting to address new standards using computational approaches? Or a math/CS teacher wanting to motivate your students with real-world problems? Consider applying for a teacher integrator position Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Funded by NSF, WPI has developed a curriculum that uses computational tools and approaches to address complex biological problems that will motivate your students.
