Talking Book News
Here are some handy FYIs on returning your Talking Books player and books:

  • Please return your player to the library once you’re finished with it, as it is a long-term loan from the state of Virginia.

  • Please let Beth know why you’re returning the player so she can update your records, whether the machine needs repairs or if you’re finished with it.

  • You can return your books simply by throwing away the card with your address on it and dropping the cartridge in its container in the mail. Be sure to leave the label with the library’s address on the container so it comes back to us.

Coming Soon: Friends of the Library Bookstore
In the next couple of months, CRRL’s Friends of the Library will be opening a bookstore next to Access Services on Olde Greenwich Drive. Stay tuned for more information.
Meet the People
Adult Services Coordinator Tracy McPeck

Formerly a bookseller, Tracy started her library career at CRRL in 2010 while in library school. After six years with Prince William Public Library System, she has returned as our new Adult Services Coordinator. Tracy oversees Access Services and the Adult Services departments at CRRL’s ten branches. She is a typical cat-loving librarian who reads many genres and has a special fondness for anything apocalyptic.
Sightlines Book Club
Our fall selection, Neuromancer by William Gibson, wasn’t a book club favorite. You might enjoy these sci-fi picks a bit more:

The Martian by Andy Weir DB 78389
Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card DB 23934
Armada by Ernest Cline DB 82109
Alif the Unseen by G. Willow Wilson DB 74853
Islands in the Net by Bruce Sterling DB 43055

Winter 2019 Book Club Selection:

by Mary Robinette Kowal DB 91941

This is the book I’ve been telling everyone about because it was one of my favorites for 2018. Hidden Figures meets The Martian when an asteroid collides with Earth in the 1950s, speeding up the Space Race. You’ll root for the strong female protagonist and enjoy a diverse cast of characters. Anyone interested in the early days of NASA and the Space Race will enjoy this alternate history.

Tech News
CRRL’s OverDrive collection has over 10,000 titles, many of which are available on eAudio. For eBooks, iPhone and Android devices feature competent screen readers in the form of VoiceOver and TalkBack, respectively. For the best experience with both, use the Kindle app which offers the greatest compatibility.

Enabling VoiceOver on iPhone:
Open Settings then go to General, Accessibility, and VoiceOver. Toggle the VoiceOver option to turn it on.

Enabling Android TalkBack:
Open device settings, select Accessibility, then tap TalkBack (not the option for Select to Speak). The location of Accessibility and TalkBack may differ depending on your device.

Downloading eBooks from CRRL’s OverDrive:

  • When you find an eBook, choose the Kindle format. This will take you to Amazon’s website to complete the checkout. Be sure to sign in with the same Amazon account as you did with your Kindle app.

  • Once the checkout is complete, open the Kindle app and the book should be waiting for you. Double-tap to read.

  • To enable continuous reading, swipe up with two fingers on iPhone or swipe right and double-tap on Android devices.

That’s it! You’ll now be able to access thousands more ebooks from OverDrive!
