Reflections
As Women’s History month comes to an end, I’ve been reflecting on the progress that the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame has made over the last 35 years and the work we continue to do to celebrate the enduring contributions of Colorado’s extraordinary women. The ground broken by many of our historical inductees very likely may have paved the way for many of our contemporary inductees whose achievements are currently inspiring the next generation of women changemakers. CWHF will continue to share the incredible stories of our Inductees through our Events, Great Colorado Women Film series, Portrait exhibits and Speakers Bureau.

Honoring our Own – Alexis Cuarón Anderten
With gratitude and appreciation, the entire CWHF Board of Directors, honors Alexis Cuarón Anderten for her roles serving the CWHF working Board of Directors for the last three years. Alexis performed as both the Inductee Relations Chair and most recently as our Secretary. Her passion and dedication to broaden our reach with our Inductees has been both instrumental and inspirational in elevating CWHF to the next level. We are so grateful for her leadership and countless hours of volunteering her time in so many areas and she is already missed!

In Memoriam of Hall Inductee Mary Mullarkey 1943 - 2021 |
|
Mary Mullarkey, the first woman to serve as Colorado Supreme Court chief justice, has died
Mullarkey’s expertise in race and gender discrimination cases under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act earned her a post at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission office in Denver in 1973. In the office of Attorney General J. D. MacFarlane she was tapped to oversee appeals, and later, as solicitor general, she was lead counsel for the state in major appellate cases from 1975 to 1982. Governor Dick Lamm recruited Mullarkey as his chief legal advisor from 1982 to 1985.

Joan Marwitz
Originally from Chicago, after 21 years, Joan now calls Colorado home. With over 30 years of experience in marketing and fundraising, and an MBA from Loyola University of Chicago, Joan has worked in both the private and nonprofit sectors. She has previously served on several boards as well as held the position of Chief Fundraising Officer at Rocky Mountain Human Services. Her passion is helping underserved populations as well as mentoring young woman to support their professional endeavors. Her expertise in fundraising and grant writing allows her to continue assisting more organizations.

Dr. Ranee Shenoi, M.D.
Dr. Ranee Shenoi, M.D. is a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialist in private practice in Denver, CO.
She came to the United States from India at the young age of 12. Her education: Bachelor’s in chemical engineering (UT Austin) and medical doctor degree (UT Houston), internship in Internal Medicine (Columbia University) and residency at the New York Hospital (Cornell University) in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Dr. Shenoi represented Colorado in the Mrs. United States Pageant in Las Vegas in 2008 earning the Civic Award. In 2010 and 2011, Dr. Shenoi was selected as “Top Doc” by 5280 magazine. She has served as president of the Foothills Medical Society and on the Board of Directors for the Colorado Medical Society and Girl Scouts of Colorado. Dr. Shenoi is married with two children.

Shoulders we Stand On
Follow along as we explore the parallel pathways many of our historical and contemporary inductees have forged and consider what our future women in leadership will look like.
Helen Ring Robinson (1860-1923) was the first woman elected to the Colorado State Senate (1912) and the second woman elected to any state senate in the nation. As an active Progressive, she got passed a women’s minimum wage bill (later overruled), advocated for women serving on juries, and for social reform to aid women, education, labor, and the mentally ill. She toured to promote national women’s suffrage. She also investigated working conditions at Colorado Fuel and Iron Co. and defended the immigrant workers, victims of the 1914 Ludlow Massacre. She was ahead of her time.
Polly Baca has a life-long list of accomplishments as a pioneer for both women and Latin Americans. She served as regional administrator of the General Services Administration of the Rocky Mountain Region, as special assistant to President Bill Clinton, and as director of the U.S. Office of Consumer Affairs. Baca was the first minority woman to be elected to the Colorado State Senate and served in the Colorado legislature for 12 years. She was also the first Latina woman to co-chair a National Democratic National Convention and the first Latina to receive a major party nomination for the U. S. Congress.
