NEW AND FEATURED CLASSES:

1.TAI CHI FOR HEALTHY AGING AND BETTER BALANCE
Beginning with a grant from the Tufts Foundation in 2011, BTC has developed a unique, extraordinarily effective program for restoring vitality and improving balance in senior populations and those with balance challenges and increased risk of falls.  Tai Chi For Healthy Aging And Better Balance (tm) uses Tai Chi principles of Rooting, Centering, Pulsing, and Flow to increase vitality, reduce stress, and improve stability and balance.

Unlike other Tai Chi programs, the BTC program goes beyond the rote repetition of fixed moves, enabling students to utilize their lessons in the complex challenges of daily life. Rooted in decades of teaching experience, it combines the essence of the ancient arts with a modern, scientific understanding of the human body-mind.

"I had taken some bad falls. With Tai Chi it is never too late. I feel rescued and rejuvenated, able to take on the challenges of travel, raising grandkids, and my garden.  It has made a difference in my competence, resilience, and general well-being. " --J.S.

"The practices were simple and profound...The increase in self-reliance has been global...The effect in my life has been immeasurable." --S.S

2.PRIMAL QIGONG
This class combines powerful practices from several different systems of qigong (chi kung), including:  the Wuji (Primordial Chaos) Qigong of Duan Zhiliang; Er Mei (Healing) Qigong ; the neigong component of Kuntao Silat De Thouars; Ki-Aikido of Koichi Tohei; and Yiquan.  The theme of all these methods is the restoration of natural states of energy and vitality, combined with psychological balance, positivity, and peace. ("I am sharing these practices, in many cases for the first time, because the current levels of stress, disease, and conflict in the world require the most powerful possible healing forces for us all."--Don Miller). Open to all levels past TC102

3.MARTIAL TAI CHI
Original Tai Chi was held to have 3 major aspects:  Health, Martial, and Spiritual.  Today, many people ignore or have no understanding of Tai Chi as an extremely powerful and effective system of self-defense and combat capability.  In this class we will learn the Tai Chi methods of striking (with hands, legs, elbows, etc); Tai Chi defensive skills (mobility, neutralization, rooting, sensitivity); mental/energetic skills and strategies; and weapons work. Although classes will be conducted totally in remote (zoom) form, major upgrades to one's martial/self-defense capacity can nonetheless be obtained.  Understanding the martial side of Tai Chi energizes and informs its health and spiritual aspects.   Open to all levels past TC102 and PengLuJiAn.

4.YANG STYLE SHORT FORM, FIRST SECTION
Yang style Tai Chi is the most widely practiced form in the world. It emphasizes rooted, flowing movements; relaxed, yet mindful awareness and intention; and the integration of mind, body, and energy. The class will cover the 20 movements of the First Section of the Yang style form, a 3-5 minute sequence that becomes both a moving meditation and a whole-body exercise routine. Open to students who have completed TC101/102 and one additional class.

5. DAN LIAN
Deep exploration of single movements (dan lian) is one of the key practices in the original method of Tai Chi. "A hundred repetitions of a single movement is worth far more than a hundred different moves done only one time each."

Each week's class will focus on a different single Tai Chi move (e.g. White Crane Spreading Wings) and will include at least 300-400 repetitions of that move; plus warmups and secondary movements to balance out the practice. Each move will be practiced as Standing Meditation; Moving Qigong; Interactive/Martial Maneuver; and Energy Pattern.  Variations in Frame, Height, Speed, Footwork, and Intention will also be explored. Certain moves may also be done with objects/equipment--light weights, staffs, knives, feathers, etc.

Improvements in chi flow and understanding occur through this method that are unattainable in any other way. Open to those who have completed Tai Chi 102 and Peng Lu Ji An OR have at least 6 months experience in any Tai Chi Form.

FOUR FROM THE TAI CHI CLASSICS

1.Energy (jing) is rooted in the feet, developed by the legs, directed by the waist (yao), expressed through the Fingers.
2.Step like a cat walking; mobilize energy as through drawing silk.
3.When one part moves, all parts move; when one part stops, all parts stop.
4.In stillness like a mountain; in motion, like a great river.

FROM MASTER LIANG TUNG TSAI

“The teacher however, can only lead the student to the correct gate, he cannot compel him to go further. Somewhere inside the gates, masses of gold and diamonds lie hidden. It is up to the student to go beyond the door, into the inner rooms to search for the treasure. If one relies entirely on the teacher one will never find the treasure.”

FROM MIKE PEKOR

Tai Chi is truly like a Swiss Army Knife of exercises: part centering, part physics, part stretch, part strengthen, part balance, part focus, part relax, part martial concepts and principles (sink and rise, rotational force), part philosophy, part meditation, part healing. Each day, pick a part and work on it.

THREE FROM STEVEN WRIGHT

1.I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.
2.Depression is merely anger without enthusiasm.
3.If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.

FROM THE DIRECTOR
                                    Panjiayuan (the Dirt Market)

my last day in Beijing
walking from stall to stall in a December wind,
nothing, nothing, disappointment
until at last, in the back of a tiny shop:
two small dark figurines, nothing special
--just so I don’t go home empty-handed

and back in Massachusetts, as snow falls,
I start to polish them, a pair of bronze lions slowly emerging,                                                                      gleaming and fierce, from beneath layers of tarnish

I don’t know which I love more, the gold revealed
or the ancient darkness that hid and held them
