Enjoy two engaging presentations!
Drugs and Geriatric Dental Care

Presenter: Dr. Ally Dering-Anderson, clinical associate professor in the department of pharmacy practice & science, UNMC College of Pharmacy.

About the presentation: “Dealing with drugs is frustrating when it’s the side effects from the drugs that make providing quality dental care a challenge. We’ll talk about some of those challenges and possible solutions. It will be a fun day with a little bit of learning thrown in for good measure!”

The course objectives are to:
  • recognize the value in accessing the PDMP for patient-specific prescription drug concerns;
  • evaluate proper pain management based on published data regarding dental pain;
  • describe those drug classes frequently resulting in clinically significant dry mouth;
  • assess in-take questions regarding non-drug therapies common amongst dental patients; and
  • expand interprofessional collaboration between dentists and pharmacists.
Diabetes Mellitus and Glycemic Control: New Understanding and Treatments for an Escalating Public Health Crisis

Presenter: Dr. Larry Crouch, associate professor in the department of oral biology, UNMC College of Dentistry.

About the presentation: "The incidence of type 2 diabetes has exploded in this country, with 11.5%-13.0% of all adults having the disease. This is an important consideration for oral health care providers because a person's body's ability to regulate their blood glucose level is diminished with diabetes and prediabetes. The lack of adequate blood glucose control in the weeks and months prior to a dental visit can result in impaired wound healing and tissue repair, with subsequent increased risks for infection and poor treatment outcomes."

The course objectives are to:
  • illuminate the scope of the problem of diabetes;
  • develop a solid foundational understanding of the diabetes type 1 and type 2 disease processes; and
  • utilize this framework to discuss exciting new findings, new drugs and new hopes in managing these challenging diseases.
