Our New Home!
Moved! We are very happy to be in our new location!
  • So much more room! Increases production capacity for liquid and solid extracts.
  • Each operational area now has dedicated space. Rooms for
  • garbling,
  • grinding,
  • calcining,
  • equipment wash down, and more
  • Classroom space for David Winston’s Center for Herbal Studies herbalist training program for those attending in person, and for other education events.

It feels good to have brought new life into a long dormant area by repurposing a building that had been empty for over 20 years.
We kept sustainability as a priority for our move.
  • Reusable crates were rented rather than relying primarily on boxes, and those boxes that were used were repurposed.
  • The only moving material bought was pallet wrap, which was donated to a local organization that turns it into park benches.

Our phone number is the same,
but our new address is:
401 E Washington Ave.

AHG Honors David Winston RH(AHG)
Herbalist & Alchemist founder and president David Winston, RH(AHG) was recently honored by the American Herbalists Guild for 31 years of service as Chair and co-founder of the AHG Admissions Review Advisory Committee. The Admissions Review Advisory Committee ensures a core level of knowledge and experience in the practice of botanical medicine that reflects a meaningful standard to herbalists themselves, to consumers, and to other health professionals and institutions, indicated by the letters RH(AHG) after an herbalist’s name.

The American Herbalists Guild was founded in 1989 as a non-profit, educational organization to represent the goals and voices of herbalists specializing in the medicinal use of plants. The Guild promotes clinical herbalism as a viable profession rooted in ethics, competency, diversity, and freedom of practice, and supports access to herbal medicine for all and advocates excellence in herbal education.

I was honored to be a recognized alongside my colleagues and friends, Christopher Hobbs and Michael Tierra, for our long service,” David said. “The ARB has worked diligently for 32 years to create meaningful, relatively objective, and fair admissions standards and processes so that we can effectively gauge the qualifications and level of training of applicants for AHG professional membership. Our goal has been to honor all herbal traditions and find ways of understanding a practitioner’s level of competence, knowledge, and experience.”
Hawthorn Solid Extract™ Wins Again!

David Winston’s Hawthorn Solid Extract™ won the
Delicious Living Functional Food award in two categories!
Functional Food category (Gold/Retailer Choice)
Functional Food category (Silver/Consumer Choice)
We were all thrilled when David Winston’s Hawthorn Solid Extract™ was chosen as Botanical Product of the Year by NutraIngredients-USA last summer, but are over the moon to have it win two awards in such a short time. And with the doubled solid extract manufacturing capacity we now have, even more people will have the opportunity to experience its heart health benefits in the future.
Beauty from Within
Beauty from Within is the latest trend in the cosmetics industry, but in many ways what they are describing has been a part of traditional medicine and health knowledge for millennia. When you take care of yourself, you’re going to look better, and feel better physically and emotionally.

So pretty packaging aside, the reality is this is how we have used herbal products – teas, tinctures, and oils – for thousands of years to stay healthy, feel vibrant and look good. Beauty from within is really about taking care of yourself.

Reformulations
From time-to-time David changes some formulas, usually because certain herbs have become difficult to source in the quality we insist upon, or because his ongoing studies convince him that a different herb will work even better, or both. With that in mind, we are discontinuing a 2 simple extracts and reformulating those combination formulas that contain them.
Discontinued:
  • Cramp Bark, which is popular but David thinks Black Haw makes a superior extract, and is more available.
  • Roman Chamomile, which has become extremely difficult to find.

Reformulations:
  • Full Moon: Chamomile replaces Roman Chamomile
  • Old World Bitters: Horehound replaces Roman Chamomile

Here’s what David wants you to know:
“As with any situation where we try to give substitutes, it depends on why someone is taking an herb because they have multiple activities.
  • Roman Chamomile is similar to German Chamomile as a carminative. The German Chamomile tastes better, but is less bitter (so not as good a digestive bitter).
  • Roman Chamomile also has superior antispasmodic effects.
  • So as a bitter, substitute any bitters formula,
  • As a carminative - use German Chamomile,
  • As a GI antispasmodic - use Wild Yam, Cyperus, Catnip.
  • As a Uterine antispasmodic - use Black Haw, Cyperus.

  • Black Haw and Cramp Bark are closely related botanically, chemically, and virtually identical medicinally.
  • Based on my clinical experience and that of the Eclectic Physicians, Black Haw is slightly stronger as an antispasmodic. I definitely prefer it.
  • It is funny that Cramp bark got the common name based on this usage when for most of the 1830s-1940s, Black Haw was definitely the preferred species!”
