President’s Message

Michele Vass, President

Hello Friends!

I did it! By the time you read this article, I will be one book away from finishing my goal of reading 52 books this year! How did I accomplish this you ask? I switched almost entirely to consuming audio books through the Libby App which offers free access to tens of thousands of titles with your Placer County Library card. I rarely have time to sit and read a physical book, so I’m living my active life with audio books. You will no longer see me driving through town dancing in my seat and singing in the car. Now I'm relaxed and contemplative as I listen to my latest book; unless I'm approaching Rocklin Road and Pacific, then I’m holding on for dear life as I dodge everyone who still cannot navigate the roundabout!

What did I accomplish besides entertaining myself? I learned SO MUCH! I read books on different aspects of World War II, stories about the immigrant experience, some really great memoirs, titles on addiction and drugs, books that enlightened me about faiths different than my own, and some fiction as a palate cleanser in between. I guess what I’m saying is that I am not the same Michele I was on January 1, 2023. I’ve changed by 52 books.

One thing that has remained the same these past 41 years is our organization’s commitment to Rocklin and the Placer County Library System. It is an institution that is highly valued in our community and continues to evolve to meet the needs of our residents.

Our board is looking forward to 2024 and partnering with each of you to continue our work. I can’t thank you enough for your contributions and support of the Placer County Library System by being a member of the Rocklin Friends of the Library. We can’t do our advocacy, outreach, and collection development without you.

In Service,

Michele

Placer County Library Update

by Tony Carmack

A few highlights from the happenings in the Placer County Library (PCL) are outlined below.

The Placer County Library’s website has been completely redesigned, and it is spectacular! Features include—

  • Quick search of the catalog from the front page

  • Calendar of events for all locations, including a separate story time calendar

  • Quick access to popular online resources: Libby, Hoopla, and Kanopy

  •  Hours, addresses, and maps of library locations

  •  List of most circulated items

Each month you will notice “book carousels” that highlight (and directly link to) new materials as well as timely topics. For example, for November’s Native American Heritage Month, there are titles from Caldecott winning picture book, We are Water Protectors by Carole Lindstrom to National Book Award Finalist and inspiration for the movie, Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann. And all year long there are recent acquisitions in the carousels for adult, teen, and children's fiction and non-fiction as well as the new DVDs and videogames.

------------------------------------------------

While we serve the public that comes through the door every day, we've established ties with community organizations that you might not be aware of. Some examples of those that we’ve made presentations to or made contacts with include:

  • Rocklin Unified School District Elementary School Classes
  • RUSD Adult Transition Program
  • Sierra College Early Childhood Education (ECE) Classes
  • Placer School for Adults
  • Placer County Office of Education Literacy Initiatives including Family, Friends, and Neighbors and Father Literacy
  • Placer County Jail
  • South Placer Soroptimists
  • South Placer Rotary
  • …and more!

There’s a diverse range of organizational members, each driven by distinct missions. They are all bound, though, by their interest in library resources.

Used Book Sale Update

by Gloria Beverage

A huge thanks to the book lovers in this community who supported the Rocklin Friends of the Library’s semi-annual surplus book sale last month. We raised nearly $900, gained six new members and two volunteers. Many thanks also to the volunteers who worked throughout the day.

In addition to holiday books, we will be selling a selection of great gift books, CDs and DVDs as well as children’s books in our bookstore during December. Adult and children’s books (unless marked) are $3 for hardbacks and $2 for paperbacks, CDs and DVDs.

And be sure to check out our eBay store for some unique book ideas for that hard-to-shop for friend or family member.

We welcome donations of gently used books, CDs and DVDs to keep our inventory fresh. Please note that we cannot accept computer manuals, textbooks, Bibles, VHS tapes, dictionaries or encyclopedias.

Throughout the year our Dream Team keeps the bookstore stocked as well as sets up and packs books at our quarterly book sales. However, our “players” sometimes get benched because of injuries or vacations, so we could use backup team members. Hours are minimal; the benefits are huge!

Proceeds from our sales are used by the Placer County library staff to purchase adult and children’s books as well as special materials for the library collection. Friends also host programs throughout the year, including the Birthday Club and Storytime at the Station.

To join the Dream Team or to donate books, send an email to [email protected].

To become a member of the Friends of the Library, visit www.rocklinfriends.org. Memberships start at $10.

We are accepting material donations!

We are accepting books, CDs, DVDs, and puzzles for our used book sales. Email us to schedule a time to drop off your donation - [email protected]
