One Health Institute Updates

Winter 2025

CSU One Health Institute

Note from our Director

Dear One Health friends, colleagues and students,

How time flies! Another great semester is wrapping up and I am pleased to share with you some highlights of the past few months and some exciting upcoming opportunities.

In November we hosted our annual One Health Day Celebration, with this years topic focusing on Addressing Ecosystem Health Challenges through the One Health Approach. It was exciting and inspiring hearing about the ways in which our colleagues are carrying the One Health mission across their various disciplines. Additionally, in conjunction with One Health Day, Colorado State agencies signed a landmark One Health agreement that aims to help protect public, environmental, and animal health across the state. A great win for the One Health mission!

Next, we are now accepting proposals for our two 2026 One Health funding opportunities - the Student One Health Award and the One Health Faculty Pilot Grant. We are always excited to see and learn about the projects that we may be able to support!

We are also very excited to announce the launch of the Triosphere website, a new web data repository for researchers that seeks to gather and house publicly available data resources that relate to One Health.

Finally, I would like to thank the One Health Institute team for all of the hard work they have put in over this fall semester - from event preparation to representing the One Health Institute in a variety of arenas, I could not do my job without all the work they put in behind the scenes. Thank you to all of the colleagues, friends, and partners at CSU and beyond, I look forward to working with all of you again in the New Year and am wishing you all a very happy, healthy, and restful holiday season!

Sincerely,

Tracey Goldstein, Ph.D.

One Health Stories

One Health Day 2025

On November 6, we hosted our annual One Health Day celebration around this year’s theme, Addressing Ecosystem Challenges through the One Health Approach. The presenters highlighted work done across the globe, ranging from addressing megafires in Australia to the health of lakes in Honduras, from the role that carrion decomposers play in ecosystem health to how gaming can help us build a better understanding of the relationship between people, animals, and the environment. Our celebration showcased the power that the One Health approach can have when it comes to addressing these challenges. A special thank you to our keynote speaker, Dr. Susan Howard from George Mason University!

Colorado Agencies Sign Landmark One Health Agreement

On November 3rd, a collective of Colorado State agencies - the Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA), the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), and Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) - signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the goal to help establish protocols that better protect and respond to issues that lie at the intersection of human, animal, and environmental health in Colorado.

CSU Launches Triosphere Website

We are excited to announce the launch of the Triosphere website, an interdisciplinary initiative intended to gather publicly available data resources that relate to One Health with a current focus on Colorado. This site was spurred forward by conversations with a multitude of individuals, and organizations have made it clear that there is need for a centralized web repository to access One Health related, or One Health adjacent data to better support holistic data analysis

While this site was created with the intention of serving researchers involved in One Health work – we welcome and encourage anyone and everyone to use it! We are strong proponents of community science, and in creating a site that collects all of these databases, we strive to make One Health data more accessible.

Drew Jones Defends Master's Presentation

Drew Jones is a masters student working in Shantanu Jathar’s lab. He will be presenting his Master’s project " HICCUP - High-Flow Rate and Improved Condensation Collection for Bioaerosols Using Pre-Concentration” on Monday Dec 15 at 9am in the CSU Powerhouse, room 104.

An overview of his project from the BROADN website:

Bioaerosols, which are tiny biological particles in the air, can be collected efficiently using water condensation samplers like BioSpot-VIVAS and BioSpot-GEM. These samplers are better than filter-based ones because they avoid problems like drying out and losing the particles. However, they have a low collection flow rate, which means they might not work well in areas where there are few bioaerosols.

To improve this, we plan to use a device called a virtual impactor, which can concentrate the air sample before it reaches the sampler. We will design and build this virtual impactor based on earlier research. We will test how well it works using different aerosol models in a controlled chamber. We believe that this setup will allow us to collect 10 to 20 times more bioaerosols in the same amount of time when used in conjunction with samplers like the BioSpot-VIVAS and BioSpot-GEM.

Drew came to BROADN as part of a 3-person Mechanical Engineering senior design team tackling the goal of “Building a Better Air Sampler” in fall of 2022. He joined the master’s program in Mechanical Engineering in spring of 2024, continuing the senior design project.

Drew will stay on as a research associate in the Jathar lab after his masters degree.

2026 Grad Student Showcase

It was a pleasure for us to be able to see the incredible work and research that our students have done at the 10th annual Grad Student Showcase, GradShow. The GradShow highlights the incredible research, creative projects, and entrepreneurial work of hundreds of graduate students from all disciplines at Colorado State University. Congratulations to Ficky Muabuay (Civil and Environmental Engineering) for winning the One Health Institute's award for Research Excellence! One Health Opportunities

Funding for One Health Projects in 2026

The One Health Institute at Colorado State University is now accepting proposals for two One Health funding opportunities in 2026.

This is the third year we are pleased to support the One Health Student Award for student research that addresses a One Health challenge to improve the health of people, animals and the environment.

We will again support Faculty Pilot One Health Grants. This year's theme is “Addressing Infectious Disease through the One Health Approach.” We are excited to see the diversity of projects we may be able to support.

The submission deadline for student and faculty funding is January 30, 2026.
