What’s been going on at River City Science Academy?

These months always seem to fly by! We've had lots of fun over the last few months now that everyone has gotten comfortable and settled. It is definitely a busy season with many different events, competitions, field trips, and more! Take a look at everything that we've done over the past few months.
7th Annual Florida STEM & Health Expo was a Success!
The 7th Annual Florida STEM & Health Expo was held on Saturday, February 9th and it was a huge success. Thank you to all of the students, parents, volunteers, and staff that helped make our event great. We couldn't have done it without you! Check out this amazing video that one of our parents made with footage from the expo.
Visiting Channel 4
Students from all four of our campuses got to take a visit to Channel 4, News4Jax, where they were filmed showing off their STEM Expo projects. It was truly a great experience for everyone! Check out the video here.
Coming Up!
Science Olympiad Heads Back to Defend State Title
RCSA teams (MH, Innv, Mandarin) competed at the Regional Science Olympiad Competition in January. Overall, RCSA teams received 16 gold medals and many silver and bronze. Innovation and Mandarin competed for the first time at the middle school level and they are making progress for upcoming years. Our high school team competed for the first time and won 3 rd place. Our state championship beach campus teams got the first and third place. We will be heading to the state competition in Orlando to defend our title on March 27th!
What's Been Happening?
RCSA Gets Recognized!
RCSA Mandarin was one of 28 schools in the entirety of Duval county to earn the Florida Department of Education's 2017-2018 Five Star School Award! Five Star School Award Winners must meet all criteria in five categories: Community/Business Partnerships, Family Involvement, Volunteerism, Student Community Service and School Advisory Council . Congratulations!
RCSA Innovation Music Teacher, Mr. Aaron Leatherbarrow was recognized during the Teacher of the Year Eddy Awards with a Florida Blue Spotlight Award! This is given to teachers that bring tons of creativity to their classroom and comes with a $500 grant! Way to go Mr. Leatherbarrow.
Giving Back
RCSA Mandarin student council, students and parents collected supplies for Wolfson Hospital heart patients and their families. Dress down money collected for this valuable cause was $742. 
RCSA Middle-High School and Innovation joined forces to bring about our biggest toy drive yet! In total, RCSA donated 930 toys to the Children's Home Society. What a great way to come together as a school and support our community during the season of giving.
December Fun
RCSA celebrated their first night at the Icemen in December! Students from RCSA Middle-High were able to take a ride on the zamboni and everyone took a trip to the ice after the game for pictures!
RCSA Alumni got to come together once again for a Holiday Party! It was great seeing so many past students and providing a place for them to connect with each other.
Breaking Records
RCSA Mandarin Middle School Students did an amazing job before winter break! They made an Atom Model just like our school logo. The electrons (yoga balls) were moving on students lined up on the electron orbits. This may be the World's Largest Human Atom Model!
Award Ceremonies
We love having the opportunity to recognize the amazing work that our students are doing during our award ceremonies!
Division Basketball!
Our Middle School Lady Rockets earned the title of Division Champions this year!
RCSA Innovation Boys Middle School team also took home their own Division win!
RCSA Innovation Track
RCSA Innovation's Track Team competed in their first track meet of the season. Both boys and girls teams placed 3rd out of 15 teams!! Way to go Rockets!
Celebrating Black History Month
All of our schools took part in celebrating Black History Month in different ways. RCSA Elementary had a visit from a Buffalo Soldier who shared his experience with them. RCSA Mandarin heard from Mr. Mark Kerrin, former bodyguard for Rosa Parks - wow! RCSA Innovation held their Annual African American Wax Museum, where students dressed up as many famous African Americans and shared with others about the impact they had on our country. Many teachers at RCSA Middle-High gave out assignments and projects to encourage students to explore and understand the significance of this month.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
We are very proud to have a brand new playground and soccer field at RCSA Elementary! The area has been enjoyed by many, including our staff who had a friendly soccer game. We held a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony which was attended by many elected officials, including Councilman Scott Wilson, Property Appraiser Jerry Holland, Representatives from Congressman Rutherford and Congressman Lawson's offices, and more!
School Visits
RCSA Elementary gave tours to many community leaders and elected officials, including Councilman-Elect Rory Diamond, School Board Member Elizabeth Anderson, and more! RCSA Innovation received a visit from Eli Lichtenwald & Jacob Cederholm from the Jacksonville Icemen!
Getting into Robotics!
RCSA teams had a great time competing in Robotics competitions and were able to take home some awards!

RCSA Mandarin teams took home awards for most Amazing Movement, Inquiring Mind, Robust Design, and Complex Design!

RCSA Middle-High Rockets competed in January and earned the Robot Design Award!
All Pro Dads
All Pro Dads at RCSA Elementary and Middle-High is going strong! RCSA Elementary's All Pro Dads hosted GAME DAY today to bring fathers and their children together for a cook-out, games, and some quality time. #welovercsadads
Even more events!
  • RCSA Schools celebrated the Week of Code in December. Both students and teachers participated in fun, online coding activities and learned so much!
  • Students traveled on many field trips- visiting the movies, the World of Nations, MOCA, and more!
  • RCSA Mandarin and Elementary hosted their Family STEM Night, a chance for families to explore the exciting world of STEM along with their students.
  • Students celebrated School Choice Week in January by sharing all of the reasons they love being able to attend River City Science Academy.
  • RCSA Innovation held their Winter Showcase, a chance for students to put on a show and display their many talents!
