Throughout the winter months, nearly 25% of our patients suffer from painful cracked heels.
We like to think of cracked heels (aka heel fissures) as common but not normal. If you suffer from cracked heels, keep an eye on those tootsies to ensure there are no signs of infection.
Tips for management of cracked heels
1. Soak feet - Soak your feet for up to 10 minutes and then remove thickened dead skin with a gentle loofah or pumice
2. Moisturize - Treat with a thick moisturizer. Apply at night and then cover your feet with cotton socks
3. Bandage (protect) - Apply liquid bandage (or crazy glue, if your in a pinch) to hold the fissures together and allow the skin to heal.
4. Wear socks - Protect your feet and cracked heals by wearing socks and non-slip soles when you can.
CAUTION:
- Avoid wearing open-heeled shoes, flat soles or other ill fitting shoes
-If you have a skin condition, you may need a specialized treatment plan with prescription creams
-People with diabetes neuropathy should be extra careful. See your foot specialist or Doctor if your fissures aren't healing
