31st Annual Trivia Team Challenge - Back in Person!

Q: What was Feb. 4?

A: A great night of trivia!

After two years of being held virtually, it was great to be back in person for a night of fun and challenging questions and answers. Frigid temperatures outside didn't prevent 33 teams from enjoying a night of camaraderie and competition.

2023 Annual Appeal

The Phonathon is changing to the Annual Appeal. With fewer landline phones in use, limited access to cell phone numbers, and caller ID barriers, traditional phone calls have become a less effective way to reach Wakefield residents. This year's fundraiser will focus on a mailing and color flyer included in the March WMGLD bills.

The Annual Appeal mailing will take place on March 18th at the Americal Civic Center. TSF student directors and Wakefield High School student volunteers will remain a key component of the day by assembling and addressing this mailing to Wakefield residents asking for their support of scholarships to aid local residents.

Business Appeal

The 2023 Business Appeal is now part of the Annual Appeal. Local businesses that support TSF can join our President's List or Dean's List and be recognized on our website.

Bergholtz Family Foundation Fund

The Bergholtz Family created this fund in gratitude to the town where they grew up and were educated. They are pleased to support local students through the fund.

Coach Stephen de Garavilla Memorial Scholarship Fund

This fund was established to honor and remember a lifelong resident of Wakefield, local dentist and beloved and distinguished soccer coach who was awarded 2022 Coach of the Year awards at both the state and national levels.

June Peterson Nursing Scholarship

June Peterson, a longtime Wakefield resident, was both a dedicated and compassionate nurse. She received multiple awards for excellence as a nurse and nurse educator.

Mike Sateriale Vocational Scholarship Fund

Mike attended Wakefield schools and graduated from the Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational High School in 1981. He was a motorcycle enthusiast, truck driver and friend to many.

Pamela J. Wood Memorial Scholarship Fund

Pam Wood was a beloved speech therapist who devoted much of her life to helping children. In a career that spanned more than 30 years, she worked in the Malden, Lynnfield and Wakefield public schools, including the Greenwood School.

Spotlight on a Fund

While TSF’s mission is providing scholarship aid to local students, an equally important role we play is remembering and honoring many of our townspeople and local organizations. This is a role that is very meaningful to TSF. The stories behind each of our funds, including those of individuals who gave much to our town and those whose promise was not realized, are a key part of our success. To remember community members, both young and old, families, local groups and businesses in a positive and active way is a significant reason for our accomplishments since 1960 and our continued growth in aiding Wakefield students.

Col. James M. Landrigan Fund

The Wakefield High School Class of 1941, established the Col. James M. Landrigan fund in 1976 to honor their classmate. "Big Jim," as he was known in high school, was a student-athlete, who, addition to playing baseball and hockey, was co-captain of the football and track teams. He was a star tackle and set a shotput record with a throw of 47 feet that stood for 23 years.

Landrigan began his college career at the College of the Holy Cross and was a member of the famed Crusader football team that defeated Boston College 55 to 12, knocking the Eagles out of Sugar Bowl contention on the evening of the devastating Cocoanut Grove fire in Boston. World War II interrupted his studies and in 1943 he studied at Dartmouth College in the Marine V-12 program, training for a leadership role as an officer. He served in the South Pacific and was wounded in the battle of Okinawa.

Following the war, he played professional football for the Baltimore Colts in 1947 and 1948. In 1950 he graduated from Dartmouth and was recalled into the Marine Corps. After serving in Korea, he was assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Moscow and eventually served in a third military conflict, this time in Vietnam. He was decorated for his distinguished service with The Silver and Bronze Stars for 'Gallantry in Action' and the Vietnamese Gallantry Cross with the Silver Star.

On November 28, 1974, during the 15th Annual Wakefield - Melrose Thanksgiving Day football game with 8,000 fans in attendance, the new Warrior football field was dedicated in his memory. It was noted, "at a place in Wakefield, where honor, valor, dedication, strength, and teamwork collide in competition, the Col. James M. Landrigan Field has been perfectly named."
