Winter Illness Tool-kit

Samuel Hahnemann recognized the importance of naturally supporting the body during an acute illness. He believed that it was easier to treat a person, homeopathically, in an acute phase and that this was essential to strengthen the overall vitality of the individual. And that if the disease was suppressed medically it could become chronic. And chronic disease takes longer to cure. This philosophy has evolved and been carried forth as a longstanding belief in the holistic and naturopathic community. I continue to believe the body and immune health continues to break down when we constantly suppress disease, eat processed foods, excessively drink alcohol, or add toxins to our system, often giving way to deeper disease processes. I also believe a healthy gut microbiome can further help healing of chronic disease. The gastro-intestinal system is root cause medicine. The gut microbiome is the number one area we can begin the process of strengthening our vitality.

Thus, as we continue through cold, viruses, and flu season it is important to utilize naturopathic support to strengthen the body. I feel homeopathy and naturopathy can be very useful and have naturopathic support protocols available for all clients on the fullscript portal. Feel free to schedule me alongside a PCP visit to ensure you are strengthening your vitality!

Self-Love in February

All healing starts with a commitment to yourself. In order to commit to yourself you must love yourself! And do everything possible to get onto a healing path! The rest will follow.

Most of my clients recognize healing is an ongoing series of adjustments.Whether you are coming to heal your hormones, address emotional balence, digestive health, or immune/ auto-immune disease, working with any holistic practitioner requires adjustments. As you get healthier, often there are are layers of imbalance. Dis-ease does not just come out of no where. There are layers to healing. And given all healing involves self-healing, we must remain committed and steadfast to our path. This is preventive medicine!

My clients also recognize the value of having a partner, mentor and guide on their healing path.

Share your love with others and forward to a friend. I continue to appreciate your referrals.

Herb Highlight

The Berberines

There are several types of berberines. The most common is turmeric. There is also oregon grape root, and goldenseal. These plant compounds are all from roots(think strengthening). While beneficial for improving the gut microbiome, and bladder infections they also can reduce blood sugar, cholesterol, lipids and help with weight loss. I especially like these for inflammation.

You can incorporate these into cooking using fresh turmeric root, or turmeric powder. They add a nice warming component to food. You can also make many types of beverages as well. You can find my homemade ginger turmeric tonic in my cookbook! Also when you grate ginger and turmeric together with some honey and lemon you have a homemade cough syrup.

WINTER SKIN HEALTH

We have had a cold and dry winter! This can affect our skin, eyes and scalp. Firstly, you can add more moisture to your diet through fish, fish oil, flax oil, nuts and seeds. Other oils to consider include borage and primrose oil. Second, the skin vitamins include vitamins A, C, Bioflavanoids, D, E, and Zinc. I do not think we can always get all of our nourishment from food. Thirdly, consider topical Ayurvedic oils, calendula based nutrients for healing. I believe deeper imbalances are an internal systematic issue!

What you need to know about Lab Testing in 2025

There are many new tests on the market which are considered more functional, meaning they look at underlying imbalances different from what your doctor utilizes. They are looking at underlying imbalances in your microbiome, hormones, food allergies, and even environmental toxins or molds. You might see this advertised and even have ordered some, the problem with this is it might not really be a full or comprehensive panel, or what you need. Or even interpretable. I have found many of these tests useful, but only certain labs are excellent. So while you can have access to any test it really is best to be guided by a practitioner as to what your options are, and what is best for you.

A Special Note about Protein Powders

(see the clean label's report January 2025)

There have been recent studies that these may contain high amounts of metals like lead, and other metals! This isn't surprising to me since we know toxins accumulate in animal tissues and products and the more processed foods. I would suggest making your own protein by adding small amounts of hemp, nuts and/or seeds to your shakes. Or using whey protein from an organic source that does 3rd party testing. And using these proteins on more of an occasional basis.

Try my Orange Creamsicle for a healthier protein shake

almond milk, frozen bananna, a cut up orange, 2 dates, 3 tablespoons hemp seed and 6 almonds! Use unsweetened almond or any plant milk.
