On October 26th, Automotive, Certified Nursing Assistant, Child Development, Graphic Design, and Pharmacy Technician programs were featured at this semester’s Entrée to Employment on the Tulare Campus.
This event prepares students to properly dress, eat, hold conversation, and professionally conduct themselves while networking with people in their chosen industry.

EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION AWARD | |
Congratulations to COS instructor Charlie Abee for winning the Irrigation Association Excellence in Education Award. Mr. Abee was presented the award this past week at the 2022 Irrigation Show and Education Week in Las Vegas. Mr. Abee has worked diligently to provide the highest quality of irrigation education through the COS Ag Irrigation Academy. | |
The COS Welding Department hosted Fresno City, and Porterville College for a welding competition on Friday, October 28th at the Tulare Campus.
The multiple winners received several thousands of dollars passed out by the American Welding Society's District 22 Director, Rob Purvis.

“This program is perfect for people who want to gain a new skill or improve their skills. Students can take one class or earn the entire skill certificate based on their needs,” said program instructor Charlie Abee. “We have designed the program to be two days a week so students can work at the same time.”

5th ANNUAL SOUTH VALLEY INDUSTRIAL SUMMIT | |
The Career Technical Education and Training Resource Center teams took part in the 5th Annual South Valley Industrial Summit on October 7th.
The annual summit hosted by the South Valley Industrial Collaborative, is a partnership for community excellence whose purpose is to provide a platform to build industry-led, industry-driven, and community supported partnerships to strengthen economies in the South San Joaquin Valley. During the summit, Jonna Schengel, our CTE & Workforce Development Dean, presented on community college industrial technology programs.

On Friday, September 23rd, Tulare and Kings Foster Youth Students participated in the COS Career Day Caravan. The caravan visited all three College of the Sequoias campuses and the Tulare Annex. Students toured various CTE labs and met with faculty to learn about different career opportunities in the high-wage, high-demand sectors of the valley.

CTE CAREER SERVICES VISITS

In September, the CTE Career Services team visited with Career Services departments from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Cuesta College. The visit provided team building and professional development exercises. The collaboration harvested ideas for both teams in internship development, industry engagement activities, and other best practices in career services. | |
7th ANNUAL VALLEY MADE MANUFACTURING SUMMIT | |
The Valley Made Manufacturing Summit's annual conference provided workshops, a resource expo, and networking opportunities to continue to build a well-trained, outstanding manufacturing workforce. Members of the CTE team learned about innovative technologies, skills training, and methods to fill workforce demand. | |
Construction Industry Education Foundation (CIEF), in partnership with Monache Manufacturing and Construction Technology Academy and Tulare County Office of Education, hosted Trades Day at the Porterville Fairgrounds on September 27th.
The event supported career exploration in construction trades for high school students. COS CTE instructors, staff, and students provided welding demonstrations, construction puzzles, and a tabling session during the event.

LACTALIS HERITAGE DAIRY TOUR | |
Connecting Students to Industry
Last week, Lactalis Heritage Dairy opened its doors to our industrial maintenance students for a tour of their plant. The students learned a lot about the facility, career opportunities, and the great work happening at Lactalis in Tulare.

HOWARD E. ADKINS INSTRUCTOR MEMBERSHIP AWARD | |
Congratulations to our Welding Instructor and Industry & Technology Division Chair, Randy Emery, on winning the Howard E. Adkins Memorial Membership Instructor Award.
The Howard E. Adkins Instructor Membership Award is sponsored by Mrs. Wilma Adkins and family, and is given as a means of recognizing high school, trade school, technical institute or community college instructors whose teaching activities are considered to have advanced the knowledge of welding to students in their respective schools.

FOOD SAFETY MANAGEMENT PROGRAM | |
The Food Safety Management program prepares students for careers in skills and knowledge of quality control measures pertaining to food, food product evaluation, testing methods, area inspection for sanitation standards compliance, and the HACCP process. Students will gain skills in standard operating procedures, standard sanitation operating procedures, and even have the opportunity to earn two national certifications:
Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP)
Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI)
Students may earn a Skills Certificate in Food Safety Management, HACCP Certification, and PCQI Certification.

Tessa is our CTE & Workforce Development Administrative Technician | |
Tessa joined the CTE team this summer as the Administrative Technician for our CTE Dean, Jonna Schengel, on the Tulare campus. Tessa provides supports to CTE, specifically the Industry & Technology Division. She also provides administrative support for various grants, including VTEA, Strong Workforce, and Adult Ed.
Tessa was born and raised in Porterville, and most recently worked for the Porterville Police Department as an administrative assistant for four years. Tessa is a first-generation college student and graduated from Porterville College with an associate degree in History before transferring to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where she earned a bachelor's degree in History. Tessa moved back to the Central Valley to be closer to family and friends and serve the local community.

COS Training Helps Arborists Branch off into the Workforce

"PG&E projects that 300 jobs will be available for line clearance arborists in Tulare County along, with over 3,000 jobs available in California. Trainees are encouraged to apply for union employers like PG&E, and are expected to make $31 an hour, according to the press release from TRC."

| Skilled forklift operators are in constant demand at area warehouses, agriculture and food processing plants, and distribution centers. In this 2-day course, participants will learn to apply appropriate knowledge and safety to successfully secure an operator’s certificate for a sit down, counterbalanced, LP gas powered forklift. They will also learn safety aspects, operations, basic maintenance, and comprehending OSHA compliance. This course includes 4 hours of classroom and 12 hours of practical training that meet the requirements of OSHA. | One of our most popular trainings is coming back! The Supervisory Academy is open to all in the workforce who are in, or will promote to a supervisory position in their career. In this training, you will learn how to deal with the daily trials you face as you navigate through your position. You will also learn how to recognize the responsibilities you have as a supervisor, to yourself, your team, and your organization. This training will be your opportunity to practice not only soft skills, but to incorporate fundamental skills and make them the new “norm” for your workplace as a supervisor or potential supervisor. |
