Following our re-branding   in November last year, we would like our first newsletter to you as the Considerate Group to be one full of solutions as well as practical and inspirational bits of information to help support a maximum number of companies with finding their responsible business practices.

As key business and political leaders gather in the snowy peaks of Davos this week, it is the first year that they have all jointly declared their major concern for risks of the future to be Climate Change! According to Gillian Tett in the Financial Times “Climate issues account for three of the five risks deemed most likely to materialise in 2019 — and four of the top five risks that could cause the most damage“
Sustainable Kitchen Guide
We have teamed up with our Considerate partners Winnow Solutions - the experts in monitoring & managing food waste – to create an easy-to-use guide on how to operate a more sustainable hotel kitchen.

Our guide is the result of our combined experiences and knowledge in sustainability & hospitality, designed to assist hotels in improving the efficiency of their kitchens by taking simple steps & implementing them consistently.

Covered in more detail in the guide is the importance of engaging your staff, controlling costs, reducing food waste and water use, and investing in technology.

Air Quality in Paddington
We were delighted to have recently announced the hotels to be involved in our exciting project with the PaddingtonNow BID - to improve the air quality in our local area of Paddington. Point A Hotel Paddington, Roseate House, St David's Hotel, Tudor Court Hotel, Stylotel, Shakespeare Hotel, Best Western Delmere Hotel & Inhabit Hotel will have our Con-Serve™ data management system installed to monitor & reduce their carbon emissions in this 12 month programme.

Sustainability Initiatives at The Bloomsbury
Voted the Number 3 London hotel in the   Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards 2018, The Bloomsbury has been beautifully and sensitively transformed following a multimillion-pound investment programme.

This recent change also motivated the team to embark upon a journey to integrate responsible business practices within their operations and consequently decided to work with the Considerate Group for this endeavour.

As a hotel, they are fully committed to sustainability on all levels, which was highlighted by winning the Luxury Travel Guides Luxury Eco-friendly hotel of the year!
Tyram Lakes
Tyram Lakes Resort and Spa is a new development being built in Yorkshire and includes 325 luxurious designer-styled lodges and a 104 bedroom boutique hotel and spa with lakeside view fine dining, conference and meeting facilities. Additionally, the venue will serve as a picturesque wedding and party venue. The spa and leisure facilities include an indoor pool, outdoor pool, a leisure club, a superior spa and a state-of-the-art gymnasium.

The first phase of the development involves 50 floating lodges and Geyser Thermal Energy Ltd ( GTE) was tasked with designing a heating and water treatment system for the resort that focused on energy efficiency and sustainability.

T4T Awards Finalists Announced!
The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) recently announced the 15 finalists for its 2019 Tourism for Tomorrow Awards. The 2019 finalists are organised into the following new categories: Climate Action, Investing in People, Destination Stewardship, Social Impact and Changemakers .

The WTTC Tourism for Tomorrow Awards, now in their fifteenth year, showcase business practices of the highest standards that balance the needs of ‘people, planet and profits’ within the Travel & Tourism sector.

All 15 finalists illustrate a strong commitment to supporting change, transformation in business practices and consumer behaviour towards a more environmentally conscious sector. The winners will be announced during the awards ceremony at the 19 th WTTC Global Summit in Seville, Spain from 2 – 4 April 2019.

Lunch & Learn
As part of our advisory services, the Considerate Group offer a Lunch & Learn training series – an informal learning opportunity for internal stakeholders in hospitality businesses located within the Greater London area

Lunch & Learns  are designed for hospitality businesses that want to engage their teams in driving a responsible business culture as part of broader CSR initiatives or processes. The user-friendly content and delivery is presented jargon-free, using plain English and non-technical language.

Heckfield Place - Rooted in Nature
We are delighted to introduce our newest Considerate Hoteliers member – the recently opened and widely acclaimed Heckfield Place located in a secluded corner of Hampshire. This 45-room hotel is rooted in nature.

Centred on sustainability, Heckfield’s biomass centre powers water and central heating along with an aerobic digester that’s used to process all recyclable waste and provide compost for the garden.

Trendsetting in Sustainability
As part of UK based bedding manufacturer and distributer Trendsetter International , Considerate supplier Fine Bedding Company has been recognised amongst some of the world’s most renowned apparel and textile brands in a leading industry benchmark report into the sourcing of sustainable fibres and adoption of responsible supply networks. The report was compiled by global non-profit organisation Textile Exchange which promotes the adoption of preferred fibre and materials, manufacturer integrity and standards, and responsible supply networks.

Managing Director Claire Watkin commented “As a business we are fully committed to ethical sourcing, traceability and sustainability. Our new Smartdown range (duvets and pillows) not only features a sustainably sourced BCI cotton cover but its fill is made from recycled PET. It is also now a product that is included in our hospitality collection, catering for hoteliers’ increased desire to demonstrate sustainable business practices to attract guests.

In addition to its product innovation, last year the Fine Bedding Company’s award-winning purpose built eco-factory started using 100% renewable energy.

The annual Hotel Catey awards were held in London in November, and the event was a great success! Many of our Considerate Hoteliers were recognised for their fantastic achievements. Winners included:

Two of our Considerate members were recognised for their Considerate commitments. The Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park won the Extra Mile Award for the charitable work undertaken by their staff during the hotel's summer closure following a fire at the property. Cedar Manor Hotel in the Lake District was voted Sustainable Hotel of the Year for their commitment to the environment and the local community.

SDG Toolkit
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are 17 global goals developed by the United Nations for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Embracing a wide range of environmental, social and economic issues, these 17 goals with their 169 associated targets aim to connect business strategies to global priorities for people and planet.

Considerate Group have developed a toolkit for our members specifically designed to help hospitality businesses to implement and monitor the SDGs. The first part was distributed in December, with the second part to be sent next month.
