The winter season is off to a great start. The 2014 Drexel Photography High School Contest's opening reception details are below. Additionally, we have an Open House on March 8th. In the event that you cannot make it, we would still love to have you visit the facility.  Feel free to contact Casey Cummings to set up a personal tour.

I would like to personally invite you to the 2014 Drexel Photography High School Contest Opening Reception this Saturday, February 7th from 1-3pm. We will be exhibiting the work at our photography gallery located at the Photography Facility at the NE corner of 33rd and Arch Streets (101 N.33rd St.), from February 7th to March 6th, 2015. We are looking forward to seeing you on the 7th!
University 101 - Civic Engagement
Program News

 

Freshman Photography students in University 101, lead by Paul Runyon, spent a Saturday in November volunteering with Friends of Carpenter's Woods as part of their Civic Initiative component of the class.
In total, over 40 trees were planted along the edge of Carpenter's Woods in Fairmount Park.  The students received a glowing review and gratitude from the Friends of Carpenter's Woods and the Philadelphia Parks and Rec Volunteer Coordinator.
 
Photographer's Forum Contest

Mikaela Wegerhoff, Mattie Becker and Sydney Arroyo (seniors) had their photographs chosen as finalists in the Photographer's Forum 35th Annual College Photo Contest.  The contest received over 17,000 submissions from the U.S., Canada and all over the world. All 3 photographs will be published in the hardcover book Best of College and High School Photography 2015.  Final selections and awards will be announced in February.  Congratulations!

Alumni, Faculty and Student News
Press and Shows

 

Andrea Modica, faculty, is currently exhibiting several of her prints at the Phoenix Art Museum, Orme Lewis Gallery until April 5th as part of their exhibition titled "Platinum: Contemporary Photography."  Andrea is also teaching a class at ICP in NYC on portraiture, on February 21st and 22nd.  Both Andrea and Stuart Rome (faculty) will be in an upcoming show at Gallery 339 in Philadelphia entitled: It's a Long Way to Tipperary.  The show will run from February 6th-28th with an opening reception on the 6th from 6-8pm.

Stuart Rome, faculty, has just returned from a 2 month artist in residence at the American Academy in Rome.  There, he presented a lecture about his work and exhibited prints from his newest project "Eye And Sky."  Also, Stuart is currently preparing 2 books for Panorama Publishers in Indonesia: one a larger version of his forest book to accompany the poems of Indonesia's most famous poet, Rendra; the other a book of his Indonesian ceremonial portraits and landscapes that were commissioned by the Nasher family, (now the Nasher museum in Dallas) over twenty years ago.  A third book of newly commissioned work photographing the Baduy in Java is also in the works.

Niko Kallianiotis, adjunct faculty, presented his project Bittersweet Apple in a video lecture with students in Japan on Saturday, the 24th of January at Project Basho.  Additionally, Niko will be hosting a street photography workshop during Onward Compe 15 in mid March.


Kylie Wright, faculty, is showing: Jar of Bees - a stunning 30 year retrospective of her photography at Mara Home in Washington DC on January 30th.  The opening reception is 6:30-8:30.

 

George McCardle, a 2005 graduate, has joined our adjunct staff this term teaching advanced retouching. Since graduating George has run his own freelance business catering to photographers and ad agencies as well as working with large retouching houses in New York. The newly created advanced retouching class will teach techniques and workflow used by high-end retouching houses worldwide. You can see some his George's work at yeahnoproblem.com. 

 

Jason Varneyadjunct professor & alumni, recently shot editorial projects for Bon Appetit, Prevention, This Old House, and Philadelphia Magazine. He also shot New German Cooking cookbook out now for Chronicle Books.  In advertising: new work for Hershey, Urban Outfitters, Bluecoat Gin, Honeygrow, BlueStar Cooking, and Lostine.

 

Sarah Stolfa, alumni, was recently featured in an article in Photograph Magazine about her work on Philly Photo Day and the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center.

 

Stephanie Dore, alumni, was recognized as a Gold Portfolio Educator in the 2014 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards and featured in a Best Practices in art education screening through Scholastic at Parsons The New School for Design as a result of having one of her photography students at The Hewitt School win the top portfolio prize in photography.  Also, The Hewitt School's annual photography magazine, Perspicacity, won a first place prize from the American Scholastic Press Association for the 2014 edition of the magazine.


Shan Cerrone, alumni, has been busy working for Exxon with their next ship the Eagle Bay that's almost ready to head up to Alaska. To do so, he was recently up in a helicopter to shoot promos for seatrials. Some behind the scenes here.
He has also taken on the Director of Photography role to film an indie feature film which will be a big project in the coming year. 

 

Samantha Sheehan, alumni, participated in a group show at Umbrella Arts which has been extended through January and was positively reviewed by the Wall Street Journal, specifically mentioning her.

 

Kara Khan, alumni, was in a juried group show of instant photo work for PhotoNOLA last month called "the Perpetual Instant"

 

Chris Facinelli, alumni, recently went back to work at The Philadelphia Inquirer.
